L

If you’ve struggled with your weight and you’ve tried using diet and exercise programs without success, you may be a good candidate for a gastric balloon. The device which is also called a ‘stomach balloon’ or ‘weight loss balloon’, might help you slim down without going under the knife.

Dr. GS Sidhu, Max Hospital Mohali,

“This is not surgery, but you still get weight loss benefits as this is a procedure that we can offer that falls between medication and a surgical procedure, says Dr. GS Sidhu, sr consultant- Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Max Hospital Mohali, while talking to media during a press conference at Chandigarh Press Club on Saturday.

Sandeep Dogra, sr vice president and zonal head- Max Hospitals , Punjab said , “As per various health reports, over the years, obesity has become a major health hazard in this region in general and in Punjab particular. Those who want to shed their excess weight without surgery, ‘stomach balloon’ is a best and safe option.

Dr Sidhu informed that, ‘stomach balloon’ is an inflatable medical device that is temporarily placed into the stomach to reduce weight. It helps in weight loss when diet and exercise have failed and surgery is not wanted or not recommended.”

The use of the balloon is complemented with counseling and nutritional support or advice. Endoscopic placement of the balloon is temporary and reversible without surgical incisions. The device is intended to be used in patients with a body mass index of between 30 and 40 kg/m2, he points out.

It should not be applied to patients with certain intestinal problems such as inflammatory bowel disease or delayed gastric emptying, who are pregnant, or who are taking daily aspirin medication. It may cause few but mild side effects that includes nausea, vomiting, reflux and stomach cramps. Currently there are three FDA approved balloons in the USA. These approved devices are placed via the esophagus using endoscopy, said Dr Sidhu adding the cost of balloon in India is approx. Rs. 1.25 to 1.5 lakhs depending upon expertise and type of balloon.
