NewZNew (Chandigarh) : The 11th edition of Minerals, Metals, Metallurgy & Materials International Exhibition and Conference (MMMM 2016), one of the largest in this part of the world shall be inaugurated by Chaudhary Birender Singh, Minister of Steel, at Pragati Maidan on August 10, 2016. More than 300 exhibitors from 25 different countries are participating in MMMM 2016. It shall have participation from China, Austria, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, UK & USA. Trade delegations from 7 countries shall visit MMMM 2016 for investment opportunities as well. Considering the fact that Mandi Gobindgarh, Ludhiana and Jalandhar are emerging as major industry hubs, the domain stakeholders from the state can benefit from MMMM 2016, the biennial B2B industry event. Steel is crucial to competitiveness of manufacturing in at least nine industries out of nearly two dozen sectors identified by the Government as focus areas under Make in India including automobile, automobile components, construction, defence manufacturing, electrical machinery, railways, renewable energy, thermal power, and oil & gas. According to Mr. SS Mohanty, President, The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) which organizes MMMM every two years in association with ITE Group, PLC, one of the world’s leading organizers of international trade exhibitions and conferences, “Decisive and durable measures are called for which will slowly but surely bolster the sector to overcome these challenges effectively. Fleeting measures like safe-guard duty and MIP on steel products will not be sustainable for the long run robustness of the industry.”
According to Mr. Udo Schuertzmann, MD, ITE Group, PLC (India Operations), “International Conference on Minerals & Metals, and their contribution to ‘Make in India’ to be inaugurated by the Minister shall deliberate on these ‘durable measures’ including regulatory costs; effective utilization of low grade mineral resources; technologies for operation efficiency; infrastructure efficiency for inbound and outbound transportation of raw materials and finished goods; and availability of energy at competitive costs. There will be technical sessions on comparison of Indian steel sector with global scenario; Indian super alloys industry; Indian non-ferrous industry; role of infrastructure sector and financial sector in shaping the future of metal sector as well. The National Steel Policy 2012 envisages crude steel capacity of 300 million tonnes by 2025-26. As per industry estimates, one million tonne crude steel capacity addition requires investment of Rs 4,000 crore. Therefore, for adding 182 million tonnes capacity by 2025-26 from 118 million tonnes achieved in 2015-16, the steel industry would require investment of over Rs 7,28,000 crore. According to Shri KL Mehrotra, Chairman, IIM – Delhi Chapter & Former CMD, MOIL Limited, “India is likely to leave Japan behind & become world’s second largest steel producer by December 2016. However what needs to be deliberated is will it be the greenfield projects or brownfield that will help India achieve the ambitious 300 million tonnes target. Not to forget the steel for strategic sector i.e. defence production including naval warships, frigates etc., nuclear reactors and ISRO’s space vehicles. India seems to be importing almost of all this special requirement as of now. MMMM 2016 shall have participation from who’s who in the Government, public sector and private sector to deliberate on all of these issues and to take the sector forward.”
