3. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Directed by Martin Scorsese, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ combines biographical drama and dark comedy in the most captivating way. The movie draws on Jordan Belfort’s 2007 memoir of the same name, which was written by the former stockbroker/fraudster/author. It illustrates Belfort’s meteoric ascension by abusing people’s faith in stocks, cheating them into making an investment and growing rich through his company Stratton Oakmont, which he started in the early 1990s, to his downfall after he was alerted by the FBI. On a general level, the movie presents an unabashed and unvarnished picture of Wall Street and its culture, highlighted by money, sin, and rock-n-roll. Unapologetic and unabashed, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ received five Oscar nominations, four BAFTA nods, and two Golden Globes (one win). Jordan Belfort is played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and he is accompanied by a brilliant cast that features Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, and Kyle Chandler. You can view the movie here.
4. The Dictator (2012)

Larry Charles’ ‘The Dictator’ is a timelessness black comedy drama with Sacha Baron Cohen playing antisemitic Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen, the ruler of an imaginary republic of Wadiya. But he is also the target of his uncle Tamir Mafraad, who wishes to murder him and become the new dictator of Wadiya. The film is an excellent critique of dictatorship and speaks about the different issues of world politics in a straightforward manner, hence becoming controversial for a lot of people. However, Cohen’s performance turns ‘The Dictator’ into a classic comedy. It also features Ben Kingsley, Anna Faris, Jason Mantzoukas, and Megan Fox. You can view it here.

The ensemble cast is also boosted by such actors as Tom Waits, Abbie Cornish, Olga Kurylenko, and Željko Ivanek. ‘Seven Psychopaths’ is worth watching not only for its dark humor and wicked wit but also for its meta-commentary on narratives and the mad dance of violence and comedy. But rather than teaching the children what he is meant to do, he attempts to kindle the spirit of rock in them and, amazingly enough, leads them to discover their talents and have a better sense of self. They even start a band called The School of Rock, making what could have otherwise been a school experience a revolution.
