The concept of a chick flick is a movie featuring core female characters confronting female issues, and that may be a chick flick. A movie that a woman might be able to sit with her female friends is also a chick flick. But it doesn’t conclude that men won’t be entertained. Though targeted towards women, chick flicks are a medium for the audience to learn about

women. Yes, one may assert that they are movies that define womanhood in its totality. Due to the availability of online streaming platforms, individuals today prefer sitting at home and watching films. So, if you are going to watch a chick flick with your friends, you do not need to visit a cinema theatre. You can just invite them over to your place and relish these light-hearted and touching movies.
17. Endings, Beginnings (2019)

Starring Jamie Dornan, Shailene Woodley, and Sebastian Stan, ‘Endings, Beginnings’ is a semi-improvised film directed by Drake Doremus. The movie depicts 30-something Daphne, who is trying to recover from a recent break-up when she encounters two opposite type of men, Jack, the sober and sensitive one, and Frank, the bad boy. With each passing day, she oscillates between the two men like a pendulum in the hopes of discovering a new her that will enable her to get on with her life. Working with two different personalities, not to mention her relatives, is sure to emotionally drain her, further exacerbating her agony. 16. Rye Lane (2023)

There are many ways to recover from a sorrowful breakup, isn’t there? All these are possible only if we agree that the relationship has ended. Dom’s (David Jonsson) ex-girlfriend has left him after 6 years of togetherness, and that too for his friend. Yas (Vivian Oparah) recently went through a breakup but appears to be coping better. She runs into Dom within a bathroom art gallery where the latter is grieving over the loss of his relationship. What follows is the way Yas assists Dom in getting out of his agonizing condition while walking around the streets of South London. The movie presents the various hues of life itself while balancing on the brakes and companionship that ensue from a meet-cute. 15. Skincare (2024)

Elizabeth Banks plays renowned businesswoman/aesthetician Hope Goldman in Austin Peters’ thriller film ‘Skincare.’ Hope is taking the skincare world by storm, and there’s no halt to her success. She is aware that things are soon going to explode with her new skincare line and is leaving no stone unturned to make it a hit. But all hell breaks loose when her account is hacked and whoever it is makes it clear that he/she/they has an intention of ruining her reputation. Things get from worse to worst, and Hope comes to realize that she needs to take things into her own hands if she wishes to track down the criminal, but sacrificing her reputation in the process. Fun, exciting, and driven by Elizabeth Banks’ performance, ‘Skincare’ is a “new” chick flick worth watching with your friends. It may be streamed here.
14. Nightbitch (2024)

Motherhood is hard and it takes on a whole different meaning for stay-at-home Mother (Amy Adams) who begins to act like a dog in Marielle Heller’s black comedy ‘Nightbitch.’ Mother sacrificed her artist career in order to raise her 2-year-old son when her husband went out to work. Bitter and resentful as motherhood has left her, she undergoes strange bodily alterations and even begins acting like a dog, an expression of her motherly instincts, or at least that is what it appears. Is it real or is she losing her mind? Starring alongside Scoot McNairy as the Husband, ‘Nightbitch’ is a fun chick flick that tackles motherhood issues in a visually disturbing way but still manages to entertain us with its interesting plot. 13. She Taught Love (2024)

Directed by Nate Edwards, ‘She Taught Love’ is about two individuals, Frank Cooper (Darrell Britt-Gibson) and Mali Waters (Arsema Thomas). Frank is an actor and is spending his life away waiting for his next job, which is taking ages. Mali is a professional woman who is of the future generation. When these two contrasting entities meet, the sparks that fly take the form of butterflies pretty soon. They are not made for each other, but they feel so, and that is what counts, doesn’t it? Only until a surprising truth stirs it all up. Embodying love during a era of distractions, ‘She Taught Love’ presents a woozy examination of a relationship that is reminiscent of the indie romances of the 1990s, saccharine and nostalgic. 12. Crush (2022)

Directed by Sammi Cohen and starring Rowan Blanchard, Auli’i Cravalho, Isabella Ferreira, and Tyler Alvarez, ‘Crush’ is a coming-of-age rom-com about high school student Paige Evans who, despite her love for arts, joins the track team for the upcoming meet only so that she can be close to her unrequited crush Gabby Campos. The two even share a kiss later on. But complications start when Paige also shares a kiss with Gabby’s sister, AJ. Is Paige in love with Gabby or AJ? 11. The Hating Game (2021)

We have heard of love at first sight, but how many of us have heard of hate at first sight? Lucy (Lucy Hale) needs to be the best in her professional life, and that entails challenging her new colleague Joshua (Austin Stowell), beating him at all costs, and grabbing the promotion that both of them are competing for. But there is a catch: her loathing for him is gradually turning into romance. The same is true for Joshua as well. It implies that one of them must give way so the other is promoted. So the question is, where will it lead the two? Is love always attraction, and if so, will they allow it to control their working lives? 10. What Comes Around (2022)

When 16-year-old Anna (Grace Van Dien) announces to his other Beth (Summer Phoenix) that she is dating a mid-20-year-old lad called Eric (Kyle Gallner), Beth advises her to be cautious. But things become different when Eric appears out of the blue, and it appears that Beth knows him. But that happened a long time ago, and things are different now, and obviously, Eric and Anna love each other. Will Beth’s familiarity with Eric impact Anna’s love for him? She has to find out first. 9. Eileen (2023)

William Oldroyd directs this psychological thriller, “Eileen’ being based on the 2015 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award-winning novel by Ottessa Moshfegh. Based in 1960s Massachusetts, the movie tracks Eileen Dunlop, a young woman employed at a boys’ correctional facility. Her familiarity with the recently hired psychologist Rebecca Saint John appears to have a revolutionary impact on her ordinary self. As she becomes increasingly drawn to Rebecca’s personality with each meeting, Rebecca manipulates Eileen into accompanying her on her most recent mission. Yet, beneath Rebecca’s mysterious character, there appears to be a secret Eileen would not want to learn but appreciate. The movie features Thomasin McKenzie as Eileen Dunlop and Anne Hathaway as Rebecca, and their chemistry is part of what makes it charming. ‘Eileen’ was nominated for three places at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards. 8. Mothers’ Instinct (2024)

Benoît Delhomme’s English retelling of the French eponymous movie, which in turn is an adaptation of Barbara Abel’s novel ‘Derrière la haine,’ ‘Mothers’ Instinct’ features Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway. The movie revolves around the 1960s and two mothers/next-door neighbors whose impenetrable wall of friendship gets a crack following a tragedy. As the crack becomes more pronounced, guilt, uncertainty, and misunderstanding take hold and develop into a high-stakes psychological drama driven by outstanding performances. ‘Mothers’ Instinct’ is available to stream here.
7. Happiest Season (2020)

Concealing yourself from your family can be a nightmare in so many senses. For example, Harper (Mackenzie Davis) brings her girlfriend Abby (Kristen Stewart) home to meet her parents for the Holidays without informing them that she is gay and that she and Abby are in love. This is an even greater problem because Abby wants to propose to Harper within the presence of the latter’s family. How the couple gets around this dilemma is what we learn in this Clea DuVall-directed film. 6. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)

We all deserve pleasure. Period. Some can’t seem to figure out how or where, but that isn’t so for retired schoolteacher/widow Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson). She is aware of what she desires for pleasure, and she has even made the points. Enter Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack), a young, good-looking sex worker. With Leo, Nancy wants to spend a night of pleasure and longs desperately for adventure. This does take place, but Nancy gets a whole lot more than she bargained for, i.e., a connection. A discovery of the body becomes a discovery of the consciousness so far unprobed in this Sophie Hyde directorial. 5. Palm Springs (2020)

A strange occurrence unfolds, where two of the wedding guests, Sarah (Cristin Milioti) and Niles (Andy Samberg), find themselves trapped in a time loop. So they experience the wedding day over and over. For how long? We don’t know, but who cares? We’re all trapped in our own loop anyway. It is what we do within the loop that counts. Similarly, what our heroes do when they know they are trapped is what the film documents. And to spice things further, a love story brews between them. How? 4. No Hard Feelings (2023)

Gene Stupnitsky’s understated sex-comedy ‘No Hard Feelings’ features Jennifer Lawrence as 32-year-old Maddie Barker, who becomes a tutor to 19-year-old introvert Percy Baker (Andrew Barth Feldman) in how to “be cool” around women, before he leaves for college. Though she does the job for money to save her home, the assignment becomes complicated with time, particularly when Percy gets attracted to her. R-rated, raunchy, and coming-of-age in more than one sense, ‘No Hard Feelings’ is a classic chick flick you can watch here.
3. Anora (2024)

Sean Baker’s romantic comedy ‘Anora’ is the story of a young woman, Anora “Ani” Mikheeva (Mikey Madison), who is an erotic dancer and discovers her Prince Charming in Ivan “Vanya” Zakharov (Mark Eydelshteyn), the son of a Russian oligarch, Nikolai Zakharov. When he hears of his son having wed a prostitute, he instructs his people to annul the marriage. Something that he does not know, though, is that Ani is not someone to be satiated with simply being left behind while she sees the love of her life stolen away from her. Palme d’Or winner at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and five Oscars among other recognitions, ‘Anora’ is a must-see film that highlights the sex workers’ world with love, life, self-esteem, and compassion themes. 2. Clueless (1995)

Loosely based on Jane Austen’s novel ‘Emma,’ ‘Clueless’ traces high school student Cher (Alicia Silverstone), a master matchmaker. However, as far as her own relationship life is concerned, it is a mess, especially since she seems to be attracted to his former step-brother, Josh Lucas (Paul Rudd), which feels wrong since she also hates him. Directed by Amy Heckerling, ‘Clueless’ is a cult classic chick flick that offers a perfect mix of romance, teenage drama, and coming-of-age consequences, all of which are wrapped in 90s fashion. 1. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Easily a “perfect” chick flick, David Frankel’s ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ is about three women: Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of Runway fashion magazine, Emily Charlton, Miranda’s senior assistant, and Andrea “Andy” Sachs, Miranda’s rookie junior personal assistant. Andy finds it extremely difficult to keep up with Miranda’s demands and daily routine, something that Emily observes and attempts to pressure Andy while holding on to her own reservations. The influence Miranda places on Andy impacts the latter’s personal life, ultimately providing her with a new perspective. But can she be good at what she does? ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ features Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Anne Hathaway, who are the most wonderful in their own way. Watch it here.
