Early Life
Constantine Maroulis was born Constantine James Maroulis on September 17, 1975, in Brooklyn, New York. He is the son of Greek-American parents, Constance Maroulis and James Constantine. His maternal and paternal grandparents immigrated to the U.S. from Greece in the 1920s. Constantine grew up in the Greek Orthodoxy, and he knows how to speak Greek. became interested in music, and by the age of 11, he began studying the trumpet at school. Constantine attended Eisenhower Middle School and Ramapo High School, and as a teenager, he sang in the garage bands Milkbone and Lady Rain. After graduating from high school, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Theater from Boston Conservatory. Personal Life Constantine and his “Rock of Ages” co-star Angel Reed had a daughter, Malena James Reed-Maroulis, born on December 23, 2010. In August 2015, he and Angel got into a fight; Constantine was arrested for domestic violence. A few days later, he was arrested again, for sending Angel an email, a violation of the restraining order she had taken out against him. Angel’s lawyer said of the first arrest, “The initial argument started when Reed confronted Mr. Maroulis with photos and emails she found proving he was
continuing an affair with a married mother of a child at their daughter’s school. Mr. Maroulis flew into a rage, grabbed her by her hair and threw her violently to the floor, resulting in an injury to the right side of her head, and right knee. While Ms. Reed was lying helpless on the floor, Mr. Maroulis viciously kicked her twice in [the groin].” Constantine’s rep said, “To the best of my knowledge it began when Mr. Maroulis told Ms. Reed he was ending their relationship – he told Reed was leaving her because of her continued instability. She became angry and began attacking him. During the course of the attack she hit him with her fists and threw numerous objects at him.” In September 2015, Angel asked the court
to drop the charges against Constantine. In the summer of 2021, Maroulis celebrated 20 months of sobriety. “It started off like, I’m just gonna put this pen down, the vape, the drinks and just chill, and then it was a few months, and then it was six months, then it was a year, then it was now almost two years,” he told OK! Magazine. In July 2021, Constantine’s friend and “Rock of Ages” co-star Nick Cordero died of COVID-19 at age 41. On what would’ve been Cordero’s 43rd birthday, Maroulis said of his friend, “We’ve done a great deal to honor him and we will continue to live his legacy out. I will never forget him and there is a giant hole in our ‘Rock Of Ages’ family and the fabric of what the show is and the entire community that we’ve built.” He added, “He was the coolest guy in the room and I’m 6’3 and he was like 6’5 — he was just the most gentle of giants there was and I miss him every day. The Greek America Foundation named him one of its “Forty Under 40” winners in 2010 and presented him with a Gabby Award in the Performing Arts category in 2011.
