Vivar started appearing on the sketch comedy show “Chespirito” in 1971, which starred and was created by the comedian of the same name. Vivar portrayed the characters Señor Barriga and El Botija. He exited the show in 1973 and became a part of the cast of Chespirito’s new series, “El Chavo del Ocho.” Vivar reappeared on the show as Señor Barriga, and also portrayed Barriga’s son Ñoño. He was a cast member until 1979. While he was on “El Chavo del Ocho” for that period of time, Vivar was a guest cast member on another Chespirito program, the superhero sitcom “El Chapulín Colorado.” When he left those programs, he became a cast member on the revamped “Chespirito” in 1980. As a cast member on this second iteration of the show, Vivar portrayed such new characters as Doña Ramona, Oliver Hardy, and several villains. Vivar quit the show in 1992 because of health problems that resulted from obesity, but he later rejoined and stayed on the show until it ended in 1995. Nevertheless, after having a weight-reduction surgery, he retired all his characters who were defined by their weight.

Two years since the wrap of “Chespirito,” Vivar experimented with telenovelas with a guest appearance on “Alguna vez tendremos alas.” He then led on “Navidad fabuloja.” In 2005, Vivar was successful with his portrayal of Don Pedro in the Argentinian telenovela “Amarte así,” which was an instant hit in South America, Spain, and the United States. It later gained popularity in Haiti. Vivar’s other significant television credits include a recurring character on the Mexican telenovela “Para volver a amar” from 2010-2011 and a guest appearance on Eugenio Derbez’s Mexican sitcom “La familia P. Luche” in 2012.
