Career
Torvill became interested in skating when she was eight years old, thanks to an after-school trip to an ice rink. In 1971, 14-year-old Jayne and her then-partner, Michael Hutchinson, won a gold medal at the British Pairs Figure Skating Championship. They won silver medals there in 1970 and 1972. After Torvill and Hutchinson parted ways, Jayne skated alone for a while, then she teamed up with Christopher Dean in the mid-1970s. The pair finished in fifth place at the 1980 Winter Olympics, which took place at Lake Placid, New York. After the Olympics, both Torvill and Dean gave up their jobs to skate together full-time.
