They later ran a newsagent’s shop. During her youth, Jayne lived on Europe’s largest housing estate, and she studied at Clifton Hall Girls’ Grammar School. Torvill became interested in skating when she was eight years old, thanks to an after-school trip to an ice rink. In 1971, 14-year-old Jayne and her then-partner, Michael Hutchinson, won a gold medal at the British Pairs Figure Skating Championship. They won silver medals there in 1970 and 1972. After Torvill and Hutchinson parted ways, Jayne skated alone for a while, then she teamed up with Christopher Dean in the mid-1970s. The pair finished in fifth place at the 1980 Winter Olympics, which took place at Lake Placid, New York. After the Olympics, both Torvill and Dean gave up their jobs to skate together full-time. At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, the duo received 12 6.0 marks (a perfect score) for their routine that was performed to Maurice Ravel’s “Boléro.” Jayne and Christopher subsequently went professional, which made them ineligible to compete in future Olympic Games, according to Olympic Committee rules at the time. In 1993, the rules were relaxed by the International Skating Union, and they were allowed to compete in 1994. Torvill and Dean won a bronze medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.
