NewZNew (Chandigarh) : Lt. Gen. K.J. Singh, AVSM**, GOC-in-C, Western Command, Chandimandir and the Mayor of Chandigarh, Mrs. Poonam Sharma today laid a wreath at the Martyr’s Pillar in Terraced Garden sector 33 Chandigarh and paid homage to Shaheed-e-Azam S. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru & Sukhdev on their martyrdom anniversary and the martyrs from the defense forces, who belonged to Chandigarh.
While addressing the gathering, Lt. Gen. K.J. Singh said that I feel proud to be here to honour the Veer Naaris (war widows) and the martyrs from the defense forces, who made supreme sacrifices in various wars or in other military operations for safeguarding the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the Nation. “Vo dharti hi banjh ho jayegi jahan Veer na puje jaayenge, Vo gul, shah gul kehlaayenge jo Veeron ko nvaaje jaayenge”, he added.
Honouring the families of the martyrs, present on the occasion, the Mayor said that such memorials goes long way in educating and imbibing the spirit of patriotism in younger and generations to come. She said we owe a great debt to the soldiers who have spent prime of their lives for protecting the boundaries and maintaining peace in the Country. It is, therefore, our moral responsibility is to give top priority for the welfare and well-being of their families.
She said that we are making all efforts for the welfare of the families of the martyrs and we can do for them is to bow our heads and salute those unsung heroes and remember them. During her speech, Mayor could not stop herself to sing a patriotic song “Himalay ki Bulandi se kaho aawaj hai aayi, Vatan pe jo fida hoga, amar vo naujwan hoga”.
A cultural programme consisting of patriotic songs was also presented by the members of citizen council for human rights, Chandigarh. A play “Bhagat ka Bharat” was also played by Kapil Kalyan and his team of artists.

Sunil Bhatia, Additional commissioner, Dr. Sarita Malik, Additional Commissioner, Sh. Rajiv Gupta, Joint Commissioner, Sh. Mukesh Anand, Chief Engineer, other councilors and officers of the Municipal Corporation and other civil and army officers.
