A sibling film for kids, ‘The Secret Kingdom’ is about 12-year-old Peter (Sam Everingham) and his young sister Verity (Alyla Browne), who relocate to their new creepy countryside home. But the spook becomes frightening and then to wonder and amazement when two children are sucked beneath their house and into an underground kingdom that is not secret. Peter is hailed as a king by a regiment of chatty pangolins who think he can help the kingdom get rid of something evil. A children’s adaptation of ‘Chronicles of Narnia,’ ‘The Secret Kingdom’ is a visually appealing action adventure fantasy drama film directed by Matt Drummond. This movie is a good pick if you have young children, particularly more than one, because there isn’t much to interpret but enjoy. The visual effects deserve special mention, as they are quite good. 9. Fresh Kills (2023)

Jennifer Esposito directs ‘Fresh Kills’, which revolves around opposing sisters Connie (Odessa A’zion) and Rose (Emily Bader), born into the Larusso crime family. The girls, under their mother, Francine (Esposito), must survive for themselves in Staten Island, where they are meant to lead a life better than this, amidst a society where unspoken laws continually shift and determine who they will be. Although things can be improved for them, they cannot be secure, given what and whatnot their family makes money from. Having a women’s angle Goodfellas-esque tone, ‘Fresh Kills’ is a new take on the gangster genre without giving us a true-to-form sibling movie, but one that is dark, gritty, and sentimental. 8. Marrowbone (2017)

Sergio G. Sánchez’s psychological horror film ‘Marrowbone’ indicates how a group of siblings manages to cope with a ghost who has been dwelling in the loft of their house. They have lost their mother and only have one another for company. A girl who lives locally, Allie, befriends them and discovers their missing father was a serial killer. As Allie learns more about the Marrowbone home and the twins, the audience is given a terrifying reality based on a sorrowful tragedy, whose evidence also remains secret within the house. With a gripping approach to the mechanics of the human mind and its dark recesses, ‘Marrowbone’ features George MacKay, Matthew Stagg, Charlie Heaton, Mia Goth, and Tom Fisher. 7. All My Puny Sorrows (2021)

‘All My Puny Sorrows’ packs tightly wound childhood trauma and hurls it at the audience in the shape of tête-à-têtes between two sisters, one of whom attempted to take her own life. Adapted from Miriam Toews’ Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize-winning book, the movie is about Elf (Sarah Gadon), a concert pianist, and Yoli (Alison Pill), a writer. Elf has attempted suicide several times, and Yoli quits her job to go to see her to remind her that life must be lived and not savored. Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio’s ‘In the Summers’ is split into four segments, each capturing a different aspect of sisters Eva and Violeta’s life with their father, Vicente. From children to grown-ups, Eva and Violeta experience a complete transformation of feelings toward their father, and with good reason. As the narrative unfolds, the movie provides an intimate portrayal of a sibling relationship marred by the looming presence of their father even though the latter was of pseudo-influence. Featuring Sasha Calle, Lio Mehiel, and René Pérez, ‘In the Summers’ is a must-see sibling drama that also is an exploration of human relationships. 5. Montana Story (2021)

‘Montana Story’ is a beautifully filmed and deeply poignant tale of a brother (Owen Teague) and sister (Haley Lu Richardson), half-siblings, returning to the ranch they grew up in in Montana when their father enters life support. Both were abused by their father, and this had led to the emotional distance, which was later created between them, causing them to drift apart. Now, though, with their father on his deathbed, are they able to forgive their past, their father, and themselves? Directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the movie is a quietly layered drama that has you waiting to see what will happen next and to learn more about the siblings. 4. Quiz Lady (2023)

Sandra Oh and Awkwafina play estranged sisters Anne and Jenny whose mother has fled. The sisters must now pay off their mom’s $80,000 debt to a nasty loan shark who has taken Anne’s family dog hostage. Brainstorming ways to raise that kind of cash, they decide to get Anne on a game show and use her general knowledge abilities to win the money. The following is a side-splitting adventure as the two set off for their new home, creating a string of comedic situations, all of which contain an underlying thread of sisterhood in all its forms. Awkwafina and Sandra Oh are ideal for the job and add a fun-laced charm to their characters, thus adding to Anne and Jenny’s chemistry which in turn makes the movie a laugh riot. 3. A Real Pain (2024)

Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin, ‘A Real Pain’ is about two brothers going on a journey to their childhood home in Poland. Incompatible cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Culkin) reunite after a long time. While the friendship is as clear as daylight, there is some underlying tension and trauma that surfaces every once in a while in unexpected manners. Both guys have their problems, and the only way to keep them from getting in the way is to turn to fun and comedy. Bluntly honest in its portrayal of pent-up tension and how at times it appears in ridiculous form, ‘A Real Pain’ is a movingly powerful drama propelled by superb performances. 2. Practical Magic (1998)
