The 90s were the decade of transition on multiple fronts. With the arrival of the internet, the transition in culture was felt. As far as television is concerned, we got shows that became pop-culture phenomenons like ‘Seinfeld,’ ‘FRIENDS,’ ‘Twin Peaks,’ and ‘The Sopranos,’ while ‘Saturday Night Live’ hit a new benchmark of success and launched many comedians, including Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Chris Rock, and Mike Myers, who went on to garner fame and recognition across the globe.

It is easy to say that the 90s changed television as we know it today, bringing us together to watch our favorite shows and sitcoms. Netflix has a lot of such 90s shows that remind us of those days, providing us with entertainment and satisfaction otherwise out of reach. Such shows give us a very unique sense of nostalgia too, reminding us about how uncomplicated life used to be. 15. 101st Marriage Proposal (1991)

In the South Korean romantic comedy drama series ‘101st Marriage Proposal,’ we have a bachelor with a golden heart, Park Dal-jae, who has 99 girlfriends to his credit. Though he appears to have no flaw, every one of the omiais (arranged dates leading to marriage) he has attended has in some way faltered. Fortunately, on his 100th omiai, he meets the stunning Han Soo-jung, who appears to be flawless in every sense. Unfortunately, she also has a tragedy that is not allowing her to move forward. Is Park Dal-jae’s love strong enough to win over Han Soo-jung successfully? 14. The Hughleys (1998-2002)

Developed by Matt Wickline and D. L. Hughley, ‘The Hughleys’ premiered on ABC. It revolves around the household of prosperous owner of vending machines Darryl Hughley (comedian D. L. Hughley). They consist of Darryl, his wife Yvonne (Elise Neal), and their kids, 12-year-old girl Sydney and 10-year-old son Michael. They have only just moved into their new home in a largely white community in San Fernando Valley, California. Providing a humorous spin on culture conflict and racial issues, the sitcom demonstrates how the Hughleys struggle to adapt to the new neighborhood without sacrificing their heritage. 13. Tokyo Love Story (1991)

Starring Yūji Oda, Yōsuke Eguchi, Narimi Arimori, and Honami Suzuki, ‘Tokyo Love Story’ is a Japanese miniseries adapted from the Japanese manga of Fumi Saimon. The story is about three friends Mikami, Kanji, and Satomi who have been close friends since childhood and come to Tokyo for their respective reasons. Mikami and Kanji both have hidden love for Satomi, but when Kanji sees Mikami attempting to get close to Satomi, he shifts his feelings towards his new co-worker, Rika. Will this last? With a bitter love triangle at the core, ‘Tokyo Love Story’ presents a very intimate and lovely interpretation of the intricacy of relationships and love. It can be streamed here.

12. Heartbreak High (1994-1999)

Produced by Michael Jenkins and Ben Gannon, ‘Heartbreak High’ is an Australian television series which was a great success in the 90s. It tracks the students and faculty of Hartley High School, Sydney. Focusing on the multiracial issues, the series provides a more realistic portrayal of the students, their families, and the school administration, addressing issues such as friendship, love, family, heartbreak, teenage problems, parenthood, and all the complexities that come with them. The show set up the careers of some of its cast members, such as Alex Dimitriades (‘Wildside,’ ‘The Slap’), Ada Nicodemou (‘Police Rescue,’ ‘Breakers’), Salvatore Coco (‘Underbelly,’ ‘Home and Away’), and Corey Page (‘Home And Away,’ ‘McLeod’s Daughters’). ‘Heartbreak High’ was a spin-off of the Australian movie ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ (1993), which was an adaptation of Richard Barrett’s 1987 play. 11. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993-1996)

The initial installment of the Power Rangers series, ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,’ developed by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy, was a pop culture staple of the 90s after it premiered on Fox Kids, triggering the manufacture of action figures and other products and attracting a cult following that still holds strong to this day. The show is set in the fictional town of Angel Grove, California, and focuses on five teenagers selected by Zordan, a galactic wizard, to defend the world against evil alien sorceress Rita Repulsa and her goons from space. The teenagers are given power morphers which grant them the ability to become superhumans, referred to as Power Rangers, and apply their abilities and weaponry to defeat evil. The iconic cast features Austin St. John (Red Ranger), Walter Emanuel Jones (Black Ranger), Thuy Trang (Yellow Ranger), Amy Jo Johnson (Pink Ranger), David Yost (Blue Ranger), and the legendary Jason David Frank (Green Ranger/White Ranger). 10. GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (1998)

‘GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka’ revolves around 22-year-old former bōsōzoku (biker gang) member Eikichi Onizuka, whose fondness for women later leads him to become a teacher at Holy Forest Academy. But he has to rein in a bunch of mischievous students. Will his unconventional teaching philosophy and crazy philosophy of life be able to change the lives of the students and impart something positive to them? 9. The Parkers (1999-2023)

A mother-daughter pair attends the same college in ‘The Parkers.’ Nikki Parker (Mo’Nique) had to drop her studies after she became pregnant with Kim (Countess Vaughn). Since Kim is going off to college, Nikki also chooses to give herself a second chance at completing school. With the foundation of the mother-daughter relationship being the center, ‘The Parkers’ has a comedic spin on womanhood, duty, youth, adulthood, and the love lives of the ladies. Above all else, the show is about how Nikki and Kim get through life separately but with each other’s craziness. With 4 NAACP Image Awards to its credit, the show is a cult favorite. 8. The Steve Harvey Show (1996-2002)

Starring Steve Harvey, ‘The Steve Harvey Show’ revolves around Steve Hightower, a funk star of yore who teaches music at a West Side Chicago high school. His relationships with other teachers and students are in the foreground and highlighted by jokes and depictions of the culture of the era. 7. The Jamie Foxx Show (1996-2001)

Produced by Academy-Award-winning actor/singer/comedian Jamie Foxx and Bentley Kyle Evans, ‘The Jamie Foxx Show’ is pretty much what launched Foxx into his acting career. On the sitcom, we see Jamie King, an aspiring actor who hopes to get his big break in Hollywood but, in the meantime, must work at King’s Towers, a Los Angeles hotel owned by his uncle (Garrett Morris) and aunt (Ellia English). His daily shenanigans at the hotel, such as his courting of desk clerk Francesca aka Fanny (Garcelle Beauvais), and his fights with hotel accountant Braxton (Christopher B. Duncan), add to the humor of the show. Foxx received the ‘Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series’ award at the 1998 NAACP Image Awards for this program. 6. Martin (1992-1997)

Featuring actor/comedian Martin Lawrence as the lead character, ‘Martin’ was Fox’s most-watched show during its airing. The show revolves around Martin Payne, a Detroit, Michigan-based DJ. When he is not hosting his radio show at the made-up station WZUP, he is keeping busy with escapades with friends Cole and Tommy while Gina, whom he has a crush on, has to put up with it all, much to the detriment of the viewers’ laughter. Tisha Campbell plays Gina, Thomas Mikal Ford plays Tommy, and Carl Anthony Payne II plays Cole. The series won the Favorite TV New Comedy Series award during the 1993 People’s Choice Awards, the Outstanding Comedy Series award at the NAACP Image Awards in 1995 and 1994, and numerous other awards. 5. Home Improvement (1991-1999)

One of the top-rated US sitcoms of the 90s, ‘Home Improvement’ was apparently a spoof of the PBS home-improvement program ‘This Old House.’ The show revolves around Tim Taylor, his wife Jill, and their three sons, who reside in suburban Detroit, Michigan. Tim is the host of the home-improvement show, ‘Tool Time,’ with his buddy Al as co-host. Their next-door neighbor Wilson is the fix-it man for Tim and Jill whenever the couple has any issue. That is the reality of the sitcom, which provides audiences with fun, drama, and, from time to time, some do-it-yourself tips that go beyond hardware. 4. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995-1996)

It is one of the most popular Japanese mecha anime (a type of anime that involves robots in combat) television series directed by Hideaki Anno. Mixing strands of Jewish and Christian studies and Shinto cosmology, the series revolves around Shinji, a teenager who was recruited by the special military organization Nerv to protect Tokyo-3, the city of the future, from harmful space entities referred to as Angels. To perform his work, he must operate a bio-machine referred to as Evangelion Unit-01, one of the numerous bio-machines of Nerv, the Evangelions. Piloting means coordinating one’s nervous system with the machine to better be able to control it but increasing the risks in the event of suffering damage. Sounds a little too much like ‘Pacific Rim’? The winner of the ‘Best Loved Series’ award during the 1996 Anime Grand Prix, the characters of this show also gained a great deal of acknowledgment and are ranked among the best anime characters of all time. 3. Sex and the City (1998-2004)

Written by Darren Star, this chick flick drama television series is based on Candace Bushnell’s newspaper column for The New York Observer from 1994 to 1996 and the 1996 book, a collection of all the columns. From the lives of Bushnell and her friends in 90s New York City, the series chronicles four best friends: Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), as they explore their work and personal lives, highlighted by themes of sex and relationships, such as femininity, promiscuity, commitment, and so on. 2. One Piece (1999-)

Adapted from Eiichiro Oda’s eponymous best-selling manga series, an all-time best-selling manga series in the world, this extremely popular anime series is about Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy with rubber powers, who sails around the Grant Line, a sea route that connects the whole world, to find “One Piece,” a fragment of treasure, that will grant him the title of Pirate King. During his search-based endeavors, he is accompanied by his multiracial crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, consisting of a swordsman, a thief/navigator, a liar/inventor, a fighter/cook, a reindeer-slash-anthropomorphic doctor, and an archaeologist. 1. Seinfeld (1989-1998)

Developed by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, NBC’s ‘Seinfeld’ tracks a fictionalized version of stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld as he attempts to unravel everyday life’s many mysteries in the Manhattan heartland with his set of friends: George Costanza (Jason Alexander), ex-girlfriend Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and neighbor Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards). Humor laced with irony, inconveniences, incongruity, and coincidences, ‘Seinfeld’ has gained a cult following and is one of the greatest sitcoms of the 90s.
