NewZNew (Chandigarh) : The 3rd and final leg of the “Fame India Eco Drive” rally for Hybrid or electric vehicles, organized by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MoHI) was flagged off today in Chandigarh. The rally will be flagged off at the Rock garden and go up to ISB Mohali covering a distance of approx 27kms. It will pass through important junctions of the city like Punjab University which is one of the most populated place for youth ensuring widespread awareness on Hybrid & Electric vehicles amongst the young minds. Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the global pioneers in Hybrid Technology, is also a part of the fleet of electric and hybrid cars, running across three cities championing the cause for a greener tomorrow.
The ‘3-Cities’ FAME India Eco Drive is a public awareness campaign to promote conservation of energy and environmental benefits of hybrid and electric vehicles which are being promoted for mass adoption under the National Scheme on Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) India. The campaign is a three city event with the first phase that was flagged off in Delhi on 26th November 2015 following the second phase in Jaipur on 30th November and the final phase now in Chandigarh on the 7th December 2015.
The ceremony was flagged off from Chandigarh in the presence of Mr. Ambuj Sharma, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Mr Rajender Pal Upadhyay, Inspector General of Police, Chandigarh and Mr Vijay Kumar Dev, Advisor to Governor, Chandigarh UT.
The rally is a precursor to the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, scheduled in Paris from November 30, 2015 –December 11, 2015. More than 50 hybrid and electric vehicles from different automobile manufacturers are part of the 3-Cities FAME India Eco Drive.
“India emerges as the 4th largest consumer of energy in the world after US, China and Russia accounting for 4.4% of global energy consumption. We feel privileged to be a part of the FAME Eco Drive to educate and encourage the use of full hybrid vehicles in India. Toyota Camry Hybrid is the first ever locally manufactured full hybrid vehicle with 48% more fuel efficiency and 25% lesser CO2 emissions when compared to the car of the same size in petrol variant. From fuel efficient vehicle to developing ground breaking technology, our focus is on environmentally sustainable solutions in everything we do and every vehicle we make. The recently notified demand incentives for buyers by the Govt, in the form of an upfront reduced purchase price of environment friendly vehicles will give a boost to the demand and encourage faster adoption of these vehicles in India” added Mr. Shekar Viswanathan Vice Chairman and Whole – time Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd.
Toyota flaunts a rich lineage of over 15 years in hybrid with over 8 million hybrid cars across the globe. Toyota Camry is the first hybrid vehicle to qualify for the incentive provided by the Government under its Faster Adoption & Manufacturing of Electric cars (FAME) to receive a markdown of Rs. 70,000 in its price. Camry Hybrid’s “strong hybrid” powertrain combines the performance of a 2.5 liter Atkinson cycle for – cylinder gasoline engine and high – torque electric motor. The Camry Hybrid is a strong self-charging vehicle, unlike an electric vehicle. When the vehicle decelerates or at the time of braking, the electric motor acts as a generator and converts the kinetic energy to electric energy in a process called regenerative braking.
This energy is stored in Camry Hybrid’s HV battery pack for later use when needed to power the vehicle. In India, TKM created history by launching the first ever locally manufactured hybrid – Camry Hybrid, in Aug 2013. Globally India is the 9th country or region to manufacture Toyota hybrid vehicles. At present Camry Hybrid constitutes more than 85% of the total Camry sales in India (also sold with gasoline engine), testimony to hybrid’s growing acceptance in India. Launched in the end of April this year Camry Hybrid, sold 860 units since launch as compared to 720 units sold in the whole of 2014, emphasizing customers’ acceptance of hybridization as the future.
