A Look Ahead to the PlayStation 5 Release in India: Gaming fans in India who are eagerly looking forward to the release of the new PlayStation 5 console will be pleased to see that Sony have recently revealed some more of the key details of this upcoming gaming device.

What Do We Know to Date?

A post on the official PlayStation blog points out that there will be two PS5 versions launched in 2020, aimed at players who either prefer the online experience or using a disc. They also mention new games such as Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Among the features to be included on this latest generation of PlayStation consoles is ultra-high-speed SSD that should give improved graphics performance when streaming games. Its backwards capability means that it will support most of the games for the PS4, which was launched in 2013, and 2016’s PlayStation VR. Exact titles haven’t been mentioned, so fans of games like WWE 2K18 will need to wait a bit longer to find out if they can keep on playing.

An enhanced audio system is to be used, called the Tempest Engine. This will allow game creators to include far more sounds and deliver them more realistically. The two-tone DualSense wireless controller was revealed earlier in 2020 and it has a built-in microphone as well an audio jack and haptic feedback triggers.

How Much Will It Cost?

Sony has now confirmed that the standard edition of the PlayStation 5 will be priced at INR 49,990. If you prefer to play with the Digital Edition then the cost of getting one drops to INR 39,990.

This price puts it in line with the latest Xbox consoles, the Xbox Series X and Series S, with the new Microsoft consoles due out later in 2020 to replace the Xbox One model. Differing opinions can be found online on which console is likely to be the bigger success, with Tom’s Guide suggesting the Xbox Series X might have the edge in terms of hardware and design and Beta News pointing to the PS5’s lower price in the US.

The DualSense Wireless Controller can be bought for INR 5,990. An HD camera costs INR 5,190 and the PULSE 3D Wireless Headset has a price tag of INR 8,590. You can also get hold of a DualSense Charging Station for INR 2,590. As for the games, Sony has confirmed the prices for some of the games that will be available at the launch date. These include a INR 4,999 price for the likes of Demon’s Souls and Destruction Allstars. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is among the titles to cost INR 3,999.

The Change to the Friends List

A change that might not seem so obvious at first is the fact that the PS5 now has an icon on the friends list that lets players see the consoles that their contacts are using. At the start, this will show mainly PS4s but should start to gradually show more PS5s as an increasing number of players move over to the new console.

This could turn out to be a more important matter than it first appears to be, as this powerful gaming machine has clearly been designed with multiplayer gaming in mind. This ties in with the rise in the popularity of game streaming that we have seen in recent years.

For instance, there has been a huge level of demand for massively multiplayer titles such as 2004’s World of Warcraft, which had around 12 million players at its peak and had a new WoW Classic version launched in 2019 by Blizzard Entertainment. Other games of this type that have proved to be extremely successful are The Elder Scrolls Online and Black Desert Online, which had around three million and two million players respectively, as of 2018.

Multiplayer gaming on mobile devices has also become an essential part of the industry, with PUBG Mobile reaching over 730 million downloads by mid-2020. India is the number one country for this game, as it has been downloaded 175 million times here. FAU-G: Fearless and United Guards was announced in September of this year as the Indian alternative for PUBG as the game has been banned here.

The trend for watching livestreamed games on popular platforms like Twitch is now reflected in other forms of entertainment too. Live games on sites like Betway casino include options such as roulette and blackjack, where live dealers are seen on the screen and can interact with their viewers, much like the gamers on Twitch. Multiple cameras are used for an immersive experience that is created by game designers like Evolution Gaming, who changed their name to simply Evolution in 2020. This has even expanded into the music scene with a number of artists performing online concerts, Travis Scott even used the game Fortnite as a platform for one which players were able to listen to in-game.

The Release Date

The only big issue that we still don’t officially know is the release date in India for the PS5. The PlayStation site mentions November 12, 2020 but it isn’t clear how quickly it will be rolled out in the different global markets. We saw a clue recently, when Sony accidentally mentioned November 19 as the release date for India.

This would put India in the second phase of releases, following the initial rollout to North America, Australia and parts of Asia on November 12. It is expected to be made available in a range of online stores, as well as in physical retail locations across the country, with industry analysts keen to see how well it sells in the first week or so.
