Moonbug Acquisition
Moonbug Entertainment, a British television conglomerate, acquired Cocomelon and Blippi separately in deals announced concurrently in July 2020. It has been erroneously reported that Blippi was bought for $120 million. That isn’t the case. The cost wasn’t disclosed. In the same announcement of the Cocomelon and Blippi deals, Moonbug also said it had raised $120 million in new funds from Goldman Sachs and Fertitta Capital. The funds would be used to make future acquisitions.

Early Life
Stevin John was born Stephen J. Grossman on May 27, 1988, in Ellensburg, Washington. He grew up on a farm and had cows, horses, and tractors around him, fueling his curiosity. He dreamed of being a fighter pilot and limo driver as a grown-up.
Military Service

Partially achieving his aviation dream, John served in the United States Air Force in 2006 on active duty. As a loadmaster at the 4th Airlift Squadron in Washington, he worked with the C-17 Globemaster military transport plane. Among other things, Stevin calculated and designed cargo positions to maintain the plane gravitationally balanced while flying. Stevin ended his Air Force service in 2008.

When John returned to his hometown of Ellensburg, he was disappointed when he noticed that his two-year-old nephew spent his time looking at subpar YouTube videos. In reaction, he determined to make a new kids’ show that would be educational and entertaining for young audiences. The outcome was “Blippi,” which launched in January 2014 on YouTube. On the streaming program, Stevin plays the lead role, a childlike man dressed in identical blue-and-orange uniforms, complete with a beanie hat, bow tie, and suspenders. Blippi, John says, was inspired by former children’s television entertainers and educators, including Mr. Rogers.
“Blippi” subsequently gained a large following, with its videos receiving billions of hits on YouTube; today, it streams on Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Video as well. In 2020, the brand was acquired by Moonbug Entertainment, and the series was translated into such languages as Spanish, Italian, German, Hebrew, Arabic, and French. In October 2022, Moonbug entered into a partnership with Virgin Media to distribute the show and other Moonbug content to the United Kingdom, and “Blippi” was rolled out to Southeast Asia in March 2021 when a deal was signed to deliver children’s content to the POPS Kids app. In January 2022, Netflix obtained the streaming rights to “Blippi.”
The popularity of “Blippi” resulted in the development of a merchandise line that includes a range of toys, books, and apparel. One of the popular merchandise lines is the “My Buddy Blippi” teddy bear, which mimics 15 of Blippi’s catchphrases and sound effects. Among the franchise’s other assets is a spin-off series called “Blippi’s Treehouse,” which launched in December 2021 on Amazon Kids+.
Following is Blippi’s most popular YouTube video. At the time of writing, it has more than 911 million video views:
Criticism
In spite of its popularity, “Blippi” has attracted much criticism from parents and cultural critics. Numerous parents have criticized the excessively simplistic style of the show and character, seeing little merit in the formulaic songs about pizza and trucks. Current Affairs’ Nathan J. Robinson meanwhile condemned the show as “dead and sterile.”
Most contentious was “Blippi The Musical,” a live production that premiered in 2019. The show came under heavy criticism for what was seen as a bait-and-switch, since John himself did not actually perform in the play as Blippi; he was substituted by an impersonator named Clayton Grimm. Ticket holders were eventually refunded.
Steezy Grossman
Prior to Blippi, John created a series of juvenile gross-out videos playing the character Steezy Grossman, a kid who was born in the form of feces when his parents engaged in anal sex. He created a series of tasteless videos playing Grossman, such as one where he defecated on a nude co-conspirator after doing the Harlem Shake on a toilet. Stevin apologized in 2019 for having created that video and utilized Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notices to delete it from search engines and social media sites.
