CII – NITTTR – SARTHAK’s ABILITY 2014 opens jobs avenues for 61 disabled (differently abled)

UT Adviser calls upon industry to recruit PWDs and then skill them under CSR

NewZNew (Chandigarh) : 61 ‘differently abled’ candidates were shortlisted on the spot by 22 companies which participated in ABILITY 2015, a job fair for Persons with disabilities (PWDs), organised jointly by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), National Institute for Technical Teachers’ Training and Research (NITTR) and Sarthak Educational Trust held at NITTTR, Sector 26, here today.

Inaugurated by Mr Vijay Kumar Dev, IAS, Advisor to Administrator, Chandigarh and Mr Yogendra Tripathi, IAS, Joint Secretary and Financial Advisor MHRD, GOI, the job fair was specifically organised to bring the disabled (differently abled) persons in to the mainstream by opening new doors of employment for them in CII member companies as also to help them earn a livelihood.

More than 200 differently abled candidates participated in the drive, out of which 65 % were orthopaedically handicapped including polio inflicted, 10 % were hearing impaired and 25 % were visually challenged. The participating candidates appreciated the industry’s response and felt encouraged, as they got an opportunity to meet and interact with the corporates as part of this recruitment drive.

The positions for which they were interviewed included – Mechanical Engineers, Customer Care Executive, Fitters, Electricians, Refrigerator Mechanics, Front / Back end desk executives, Administratve jobs, Data Entry operators,  Office Assistants, Production Supervisiors, Telephone operators Packers, Assembly Operators, Lab Technincian, Telecallers, Retail Marketing jobs, etc.

Mr Vijay Kumar Dev, IAS, Advisor to Administrator, Chandigarh called for more such efforts across the region.

“Chandigarh Administration is fully committed to help the differently abled persons as much as possible. We would join hands with NITTTR and CII and take more and more such noble initiatives. These candidiates are not disabled, ratehr they are differently abled. They have certain unique and special powers and capabilities which we  nee dto indentify and harness”, shared Mr Dev.

“I call upon the industry to not only recruit the skilled people but also put in place a system under their Corporate Social Rsponsibility (CSR) to first hire such people and then provide them with the desired skills and training. The comapnies shoould come up with dedicated skill centers in their premises to impart the desired skills sets to such special employees. In this regard, we are ready to support the industry in whatever manner we can. It is the repsonsibility of all stakeholders inclduing the citizens, industry, institutions and the socierty as a whole to take them along in our march of progress and help them alead a life of dignity”, Mr Dev emphasised.

Appreciating the efforts of CII, NITTTR, Sarthak Edu Trust and Tech Mahindra, he added that “Ability job fairs act as an excellent platform to bridge the gap between the disabled and the corporates”.

The 22 CII member companies which participated in this special placement drive included companies Taj Hotels, Mahindra & Mahindra – Swaraj Division, Tech Mahindra, Lemon Tree Hotels, Competent Synergies Pvt. Ltd., Kapsons Agencies Pvt. Ltd, Baddi Foils Pvt. Ltd, Exim Enterprises, Dr IT, IDS Infotech, SMPL, AJ Travels Pvt Ltd, Jupiter Aqua Lines Ltd., Vishal Mega Mart, Raysons, Pallavi Hotels and Resorts, Focal Skills, Gilard Electronics Pvt Ltd,., Finvasia, Jubilant Foodworks  Ltd – Domino’s, etc.

Mr Yogendra Tripathi, IAS, Joint Secretary and Financial Advisor MHRD, GOI, New Delhi shared that 75% of the persons with disabilities live in rural areas. Only 49% of them are literate and only 34% are employed. The country is experiencing transition from medical rehabilitation to social rehabilitation. It is estimated that Out of 4.6 Lakh jobs in PSUs identified for PWDs, only 20,000 have been filled, while in Govt depts. and Ministry’s jobs, out of 2.8 lakh identified for PWDs, only 19,000 have been actually filled. Hence against the required reservation of 3 %, only 0.37 % and 0.44 % of total jobs have actually been filled by PWDs in Govt Deptts, Ministries and PSUs respectively.

Mr Pikender Pal Singh, Regional Director, CII NR shared that “It has always been CII’s endeavour to work towards and achieve inclusive growth of the country including all sections of the society. CII spreads awareness among disabled candidates about the job market and regularly sensitises the industry to treat the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with equality and dignity and provide them with employment opportunities and improve their access to services and facilities. During past three years, we have had more than nine rounds of job fairs and identified approximately 130 PWDs for placement in a number of organizations”.

“CII is committed to hold many such placement drives in other parts of the region as well”, added Mr Singh.

Dr K K Talwar, Chairman, NITTTR, Chandigarh, Director, NITTTR, shared that “Skill development and training are the tools to shape the future of ‘specially– abled’ aspirants. In last 5 years, ABILITY job fairs have been successful in providing jobs to 300 disabled and is constantly mobilising more and more companies in this direction. The purpose of ABILITY is to connect the PWDs to main stream”.

Dr Jitender Aggarwal, CEO, Sarthak Educational Trust shared that “Industry and Government should join hands and chalk out a strong Action plan to enable a successful career path to differently abled people. Local employers should also understand their responsibility in generating job opportunities for PWDs.”
