Ivy Hospital , Mohali has announced the launch of a dedicated ‘Cochlear Implant Program’ under the patronship of Dr AK Lahri, Senior ENT Consultant at Shri Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH), Delhi. This is the first of its kind dedicated program in tricity.
Under the program, those children who are deaf by birth , will be offered Cochlear Implant Program at very concessional rates while getting best of medical care.
Addressing a press conference at Ivy Hospital Mohali here today , Dr Lahiri said that we have started a program to identity deafness in the kids from birth. The new born babies are discharged from hospital only after we confirmed his or her hearing capacity. After that a check was again done after 3-month. All these are being done to identify deafness in new babies.”
We want to identify the problem as early as possible among new born babies so that they could be undergone Cochlear Implant surgery, said Dr Lahiri adding the speech therapy start after surgery so that the babies could start leaning speech process also which like others things is not natural.
Dr Dhiraj Gurvinder Singh, Consultant-ENT and Surgeon said that with this dedicated facility at Ivy Hospital, the people of in and around area are now not required to go to Delhi. They can benefit this facility at Ivy at very concessional rates.
Dr. R K Suri, medical superintendent at Ivy said that Zikra Khan (2-yr) from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh who was deaf from both ears since childhood was successfully operated upon for Cochlear Implant Program at Ivy Hospital, Mohali today by Dr Lahiri and Dr. Singh.
Post surgery, Zikra will be able to listen normally after 2-week. Afterward she will be able to start speaking with training from speech specialist and will also able to live a normal life, said Dr Suri.
Meanwhile Dr Lahiri who is a renowned Otology, Head & Neck surgery, Cochlear Implant has given hearing to countless children by implanting cochlear implant. He has an experience of more than 55-year. He is among one of the first cochlear implant surgeon in India. He started cochlear implant program in the year 2001 at SGRH in association with Asha Speech & Hearing Clinic. He has given hearing to more than 1000 cochlear implant recipients.
Dr Dhiraj Gurvinder Singh, Consultant-ENT and Surgeon will head the program with the assistance Dr Lahiri at Ivy Hospital. Dr Dhiraj has done his training in lateral skull base surgery at Gruppo Otologico , Paicenza city under the guidance of Dr Mario Sanna ,the renowned Neurotologist.
