newznew (Chandigarh) : Providing a platform to school students of the Tricity to showcase their creative skills, Elante Mall, the region’s favourite destination for shopping, food and fun, is holding a two-day pre-Christmas cultural extravaganza, which began on Tuesday with “Christamaganza”, a series of stirring performances by boys of St John’s High School, Sector 26, Chandigarh.
The Courtyard at Elante virtually turned into a lively open theatre as “Christamaganza” got off to a spirited start with a super-charged performance by St John’s band “The Soaring Eagles”, which was recently adjudged as the country’s Number 3 band in a pan-India contest. This was followed by a thought-provoking play titled “Technocrisis”, which has been conceptualised, scripted and directed by Class IX and X students of St John’s all by themselves. The play focused on how technology, especially mobile phones, has become all-pervasive, leaving little room for human relationships and interpersonal communication. Mixing elements of humour, the children used the play as a medium to motivate people to move beyond the virtual world on the social media and connect with people intimately. The play also gave the message that people whose hearts are filled with love and peace are richer than those who are after materialistic pursuits.
What came as icing on the cake was “Vandana Dance”, a heart-warming devotional performance by girls of Vatika High School for Deaf and Dumb, Sector 19, Chandigarh and St John’s boys. Christmas carols, choirs, “Jingle Bells Bhangra” and western dances were the other highlights of the day’s event.
Students of Saupin’s School, Panchkula will perform on the second day of the two-day cultural bonanza on Wednesday.
Stating that the two-day event is an initiative by Elante to provide exposure to school students and bring out their creative best, Elante Mall Chief Operating Officer Anil Malhotra said, “Since its inception, Elante has been regularly organising various socially relevant activities to connect with people and engage them more meaningfully. This is precisely the idea behind hosting this two-day cultural programme by students ahead of Christmas. We want the festive spirit to prevail in all its goodness and richness. The appreciation and encouragement we have received from our patrons today will motivate us to take more such initiatives.”
Speaking on the occasion, St John’s principal Kavita C Das said, “The Vandana dance which students of St John’s and differently abled children of Vatika school performed jointly is a small effort on our part to promote an inclusive society where no one feels left out. We thank Elante for giving a platform to young artistes from our school to give expression to their talent.”
