– Sculptor Shiv Singh inaugurates the Paintings Exhibition

Art Show is on till 9th November at Punjab Kala Bhawan

NewZNew (Chandigarh) : An exhibition of abstract art titled ‘Expressions 2’ by City-based artist Mr Hemant Malhotra opened at Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16, here today. The exhibition will continue till 9 November, 2014 between 11 AM to 7 PM daily. Eminent sculptor, artist and designer Mr Shiv Singh inaugurated the show.

The painting exhibition features 56 works of art, comprising of oil and acrylic paintings on canvas, created over the past two years.

This is a follow up exhibition of Hemant’s show held last year. The paintings present a riot of colors. A varied combination of works is on display, some with defined shapes and forms, and others a mélange of colors, all expressing a theme of natural world.

Like Hemant’s previous exhibition, the themes include several references to daily life and the various shades of nature – often in juxtaposition to each other. For instance, one sequence of paintings is a set of views from a window, another captures the colors and shades of various seasons. There is a wide variety of media used in this set of work – combining them quite elegantly and naturally. His work continues to be accessible and easily understood, with a very clear expression of the underlying thought and emotion.

The highlights of this years’ exhibition are two series of paintings. The first series is titled ‘Seasons’ and comprises six works depicting the six seasons of India. The seasons in these works are interpreted through the depiction of trees in various colours.

The second series is titled ‘Skyline’ and comprises five works depicting the skyline. This series is based on the beautiful colours as can be seen in the sky at different times, in different seasons and at varied locations, including the mountains. The series as a painting in shades of black, grey and white, depicting the skyline as appears during a cloudy and rainy night. Another features the bright hues of red as may be seen during a sunset. The painting in shades of magenta represents the skyline at sunrise.

Other new works on display include paintings depicting the mountains at different times of day, as also a range on blossoms.

According to Hemant, “The moments captured in these works are but fleeting moments and fade from our memory soon after they are seen in reality. I have tried to represent the beautiful colours of nature, from the blacks to the bright reds, blues and magentas as seen in the skyline. The series on seasons has depiction of trees in abstract form and in different colours. The seasons represented are – Winter, Spring, Summer, Monsoon, Spring and Autumn”.

According to Mr Shiv Singh, “Hemant has a great sense of composition and balance. He uses different mediums along with the basic elements to create new textures and has a great sense of art”.

Hemant Malhotra has been painting from an early age. His previous solo exhibition was also held at Punjab Kala Bhawan, Chandigarh in October 2013. His education was a mix of commerce and arts. He is an alumnus of The Doon School, Dehradun. Professionally he worked for several years as an IT specialist officer with the Indian Overseas Bank.
