Early Life and Education

Mary Berry was born on March 24, 1935 in Bath, Somerset, England as the second daughter of Margaret and Alleyne. Her father was a planner and surveyor and was the mayor of Bath in 1952 and a participant in setting up the University of Bath. At the age of 13, Berry caught polio and remained in the hospital for three months. She returned with a deformed spine, a weak left hand, and a thinner left arm. Berry attended Bath High School, where she had a good interest in domestic science. She further studied at Bath College of Domestic Science.

Career Start

Berry started her career with the Bath electricity board showroom. She afterward visited homes to educate new customers on how to operate their electric ovens. For her demonstrations, she would prepare a Victoria sponge in the oven. At the time of 22, Berry applied to work at the Dutch Dairy Bureau but took night classes at the City and Guilds of London Institute. She was finally able to convince her manager to sponsor her to attend Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in France. Berry then worked in a variety of cooking-related jobs. She became the food editor of Housewife magazine in 1966, and food editor of Ideal Home in 1970.

Cookbooks

As a recipe tester for PR company Benson’s, Berry wrote her first book. Her first book, “The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook,” was published in 1970. Berry went on to write more than 70 cookbooks and sell over five million. She frequently collaborates on her books with her assistant, Lucy Young. One of Berry’s most successful cookbooks is her 2009 bestseller “Baking Bible,” which was ranked among the ten best baking books by the online newspaper the Independent.

Television Career

In 2010, Berry gained a whole new level of popularity when she started appearing as a judge on the BBC baking competition show “The Great British Bake Off.” She appeared alongside baker Paul Hollywood until 2016, when she was replaced by Prue Leith. Berry had some other shows during her time on “GBBO.” In 2014, she hosted her own BBC Two series called “Mary Berry Cooks.” The following year, she hosted “Mary Berry’s Absolute Favorites,” and in 2016 hosted “Mary Berry Everyday” and “Mary Berry’s Easter Feast.” In late 2017, Berry presented a four-part BBC One series called “Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets,” in which she explored four historic houses in the UK through the lenses of food and history.

In 2018, Berry was a judge on the BBC One cooking show “Britain’s Best Home Cook” alongside Dan Doherty and Chris Bavin. She continued on the programme, renamed “Best Home Cook,” until its closure in 2022. In the meantime, she premiered the six-part cooking series “Mary Berry’s Simple Comforts” on BBC Two in 2020. Berry also hosted the BBC One special “Mary Berry Saves Christmas” in 2020. In late 2021, she hosted the BBC special “Mary Berry’s Festive Feasts” for Christmas. Berry continued to bring several programmes in 2022, among them “Mary Berry’s Fantastic Feasts,” “Mary Berry Cook and Share,” and “Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas.”

The Platinum Pudding Competition

Early in 2022, Berry was announced to chair and judge the Platinum Pudding Competition, a UK-wide British baking contest to discover a new pudding to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. She assisted in selecting the new pudding on the BBC One special “The Jubilee Pudding: 70 Years in the Baking.

Personal Life

Since 1966, Berry has been married to Paul Hunnings. They have one son and one daughter, and one other son who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident in 1989. Since more than 40 years, Berry resided in Penn, Buckinghamshire; in 2018, her husband and she relocated to Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

In 2012, Berry was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to culinary arts. She was later in 2020 appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to culinary arts, broadcasting, and charity.
