NewZNew (Chandigarh) : Padma Shri and renowned bariatric surgeon of India, Dr. Pradeep Chowbey will be in city to attend an awareness talk on ‘advances in the treatment of diabetes and obesity’ at IMA complex, Sector 35 here on May 7.
In talk , Dr. Chowbey who is at present a Chairman of Max Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and Executive Vice-Chairman, Max Healthcare will highlight the precautions, repercussions of obesity and the existing surgical solutions for patients suffering from diabetes and obesity.
The talk is being organised in keeping in view of increasing problem of diabetes and obesity in region in general and in Chandigarh particular. Ironically in its recent study on the prevalence of diabetes in India, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Chandigarh has come out with the highest variation of diabetes at 13.6%, followed by Punjab at 9.8%. Pre-diabetes burden was also highest in Chandigarh at 14.6%. With a disturbingly high incidence of obesity cases, India ranks at 3 globally in terms of obesity.
Seeing the incidence of obesity and diabetes continuing to rise by epidemic proportions, the healthcare fraternity coined the term ‘diabesity’ to describe obesity dependent diabetes. Sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity, long-hours at a desk job, increase levels of stress and fatigue, unhealthy eating habits, are just some of the factors that has resulted in the problem of diabetes and obesity to cross all boundaries of age, gender, culture today.
