Panchayat Department Reclaims 191 Acres of Prime Land in Jhanjeri

In a significant development under the ongoing campaign to reclaim Shamlat (Panchayat) land from illegal encroachments, the Rural Development and Panchayat Department, Punjab, successfully took possession of 191 acres of prime Shamlat land in village Jhanjeri, district SAS Nagar, and formally handed it over to the Gram Panchayat Jhanjeri after completing all legal formalities. The market value of the land is estimated to be approximately Rs. 2,000 crore.

Providing details, Deputy Commissioner Mrs. Komal Mittal stated that the possession operation was conducted early this morning in the presence of two Duty Magistrates—Mrs. Divya P, SDM Kharar, and Mr. Amit Gupta, SDM Derabassi. A substantial police force was deployed under the supervision of SP (Headquarters) Ramandeep Singh and SP (Rural) Manpreet Singh to ensure the smooth execution of the operation.

District Development and Panchayat Officer (DDPO), Baljinder Singh Grewal, who led the operation on behalf of the department, informed that the Warrant of Possession was issued by Collector, Panchayat Land, Mr. Amarinder Singh Chauhan on April 25, 2025, following the directives of the Hon’ble Punjab and Haryana High Court, dated February 4, 2025, in favor of Gram Panchayat Jhanjeri.

DDPO Grewal added that the successful execution of this operation was made possible under the directions of Mr. Ajit Balaji Joshi, Administrative Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat Department, Punjab, and Mr. Uma Shankar Gupta, Director of the Department. Full cooperation was extended by Mrs. Komal Mittal, Deputy Commissioner, SAS Nagar, S. Harmandeep Singh Hans, Senior Superintendent of Police, and Mrs. Sonam Chaudhary, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development).

The land had been under illegal occupation by approximately 105 parties. After the land was cleared, official possession was handed over to Mr. Amit Kumar, Administrator, Gram Panchayat Jhanjeri. Prominent officials present at the site included Mehkmeet Singh, BDPO Kharar, and Gurvinder Kaur, Tehsildar Kharar, along with staff from the Rural Development and Panchayat Department, Police Department, and Revenue Department. DDPO Grewal emphasized that any attempt to trespass on the reclaimed land will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
