Sangam featuing Raj Kapoor and Vaijanti Mala, was the very first movie with two intervals. “Mere Mann Ki Ganga Aur Tere Mann Ki Jamuna Ka.. Bol Radha Bol Sangam Hoga Ki Nahi..” Once I was going for a movie in Bombay. I got down the bus on finding a group of school children along with their parents standing outside a hall. I came to know that the kids were there for a dance competition. Although the hall was gushing with the audience, I still managed to stand in the front. “Yeh Mera Prem Patr parh K Tum Naraaz Matt Hona..K Tum Meri Zindagi Ho..K Tum Meri Bandagi Ho..” Rafi.
As soon as the seat got vacant in the first row,I grabbed it. Few minutes following, Vaijanti Mala clad in gorgeous black saree, came and sat besides me. I was so elated to share a seat with the diva of the time. But still chagrined by the last sarcasm thrown by my big brother, I did not share the news with him. “Main Ka Karoon Ram Mujhe Budha Mil Gaya.. Sab To Laye Phool Budha Gobhi Le K Aa Gaya..Ab Ka Hoga Anjaam Mujhe Budha Mil Gaya..” Lata. After about half an hour, Vaijanti Mala Ji left for her shooting following the prize distribution. I went back stage along with the kids and helped them get dressed for the competition.
I was immensely proud of myself that being just 13 years old, I was brave enough to travel alone from Barnala to Bombay and even roam around, exploring the city, alone. “Tere Husn Ki Kya Tareef Karoon..Kehte Huye Bhi Darta Hoon..Kahin Bhool Se Bhi Na Tu Samajh Baithe..K Main Tujhse Mohabbat Karta Hoon.” My elder brother was into the business where purchasing a single ship cost us in crores. A huge amount of labour had to be employed to cut the pieces out of the ship, which were then sold in Mandi Gobindgarh in Punjab. The Naval ships usually contributed handsome amount of metal. Those purchased from foreign countries, had fine quality metal which was used to make latest and contemporary home and office furnishings. The foreign material was very durable and of fine quality.
During my 2 months stay in Bombay, I watched all the newly released movies, even 5 movies in a day. I was fond of watching shooting as well. Chalta Purja, a movie starring Rajesh Khanna, Praveen Bobby, Bindu, Ajit, Ranjit, Asrani and Rajesh Roshan, was shot on our ship only. There were other movies on the list of those I watched being shot, Reshma and Shera, and Zakhmi, to name a few.
