We were so used to the Kutappas owing to bunking the school every Friday to go out for movies that we even managed to dodge the various punishments thrown upon us at school, somehow.
“Chlo sajna jahan tk ghatta chle, lgakar mujhe gle, fursat kise itni, dekhe jo piche murh k..Lata”
“Na ja kahin ab na ja..Dil k siva.. Ae mere humdum, mere dost”. We went on a two days school trip to Kartarpur from Barnala. There was a small cinema showing “Mere Humdum Mere Dost”. We planned to sneak out to watch the movie.
“Chhalkaaye jam.. Aiyye aapki aankhon k naam..aapke honthon k naam..aapka hi naam lekar pi hai..sabhi ne”..
Some of us planned to go to Jalandhar to watch latest movies. Early in the morning, four of us left for the bus stand at 3. I could not catch the bus while three of my friends were aboard. Luckily I got the next bus to Jalandhar 10-15 minutes later. Once there, I lost my friends, but still wasn’t afraid to roam around alone in a completely strange place since I already visited a city like Bombay at a tender age of 13, alone.
Instinctively, I bought Punjab Kesari newspaper to look for the cinemas around and the show timings. Having planned to watch three movies, I started for Jyoti cinema to watch Aradhana, featuring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, “Mere sapnon ki raani kb ayegi tu.. Ayi rut mastaani kb ayegi tu..Beeti jaaye zindagani kb ayegi tu..chli aa tu chli aa..Kishore Kumar”. Following was “Ek Phool Do Maali”, Sadhna-Sanjay, Balraj Sahni. “Ye parda hta do..Zara Mukhra dikhado..Koi gair nhi..Hum tum pe marne vale hain..Koi gair nhi..Lata”, “Sajna Sajna oh Sajna..Tere pyar mein main Kho gyi Sajna..Asha”.
Third one was “Do Raste”, Mumtaaz- Rajesh Khanna, Balraj Sahni. “Chhup gye saare..Nzaare..Oh kya baat ho gyi..Tune kaajal lgaya.. Din mein raat ho gyi..Lata-Rafi”, “Yeh reshmi zulfein, yeh sharbati aankhein..Inhein dekhkar jeer he hain sabhi..Rafi”, “Bindiya chamkegi, Churhi khankegi..Teri neend ude te udd jaave.. Maine tujhse mohobat ki hai..Gulaami nahi ki sajna..Lata”
My friends reached Kartarpur 3 hours ahead of me and were literally fell flat with relief once I reached back. I was declared “Filmy leader” since I alone watched 3 movies while they watched only 2. We got to know that we were in the same hall during 6-9 show, but could not meet because of the sitting arrangement.
