The Last of Us Season 2 Finale Sparks Outcry for Season 3

The season finale of The Last of Us Season 2 has a strong and dramatic ending that leaves viewers with much to ponder. It is the culmination of the emotional toll of the season and positions the story for a significant change in the future. Abby is the main focus in the final scenes. After being largely absent for the entire season, she returns in a dramatic manner by storming into the theater where Ellie, Tommy, and Jesse have reunited. Abby has come seeking vengeance after she hears of the deaths of her close friends Mel and Owen. She originally thinks Tommy is behind it, but Ellie confesses it was actually her. Things quickly escalate. Abby kills Jesse with a gunshot wound and injures Tommy before confronting Ellie. And as she makes her move, the scene goes to black, leaving viewers wondering what happens next.

Though this shift may seem like a dream sequence, it isn’t. Everything that unfolded in the theater is real. What comes next is a perspective shift, not hallucination or fantasy.
Following the blackout, the action continues with Abby waking up in an unfamiliar environment. She’s at the Washington Liberation Front headquarters, where the stadium itself has been repurposed as a fully operational military complex. Her roommate and friend Manny informs her Isaac wants to talk with her. Isaac is the W.L.F. leader and was looking for her in the previous episode, again leading to more conflict.

The final scene is labeled “Day One,” and this detail is important. Earlier in the season, one episode showed Ellie’s first day in Seattle. Now, we’re about to see that same timeline from Abby’s perspective. Just like in the original video game, the story is designed to flip the audience’s view and explore both sides of the conflict.

All that they reveal in the finale is in anticipation of Season 3, which will trace the life of Abby. It will explore her life, her choices, and how her journey again intersects with Ellie’s.
