Screenplay writer, playwright, author, director, and actor Tyler Perry is regarded as one of the most successful African-American filmmakers in history. He gained notoriety in his play “I Can Do Bad All by Myself” (2000) with the introduction of his trash-talking grandmother, Madea. Perry’s portrayal of Madea has appeared in numerous later plays that have also been made into movies, such as “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “Madea’s Family Reunion,” and “Madea Goes to Jail.”

His most well-known non-Madea project is the comedy-drama series “House of Payne,” which debuted in 2007. It was followed by the movies “Daddy’s Little Girls” and “Why Did I Get Married.” In 2021, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in recognition of his charitable endeavors.
