NewZNew (Ujjain) :  Clashes broke out in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district on Friday evening after members of a minority community clashed with police officials over alleged restrictions on their religious procession. Stone pelting was reported in Begumbagh area at around 10 pm. It lasted for over four hours during which three officials including District Collector Kavindra Kiavat and Deputy Collector Jayant Joshi were injured. Many vehicles were also damaged and more than 40 tear gas shells were used to disperse the crowd.

Over 50 people have been detained. Although no new incidents of violence have been reported since last night, the area remains tense with heavy police deployment. The Rapid Action Force has also been put into action. According to reports, the group first had an argument with the police over exceeding the permitted time limit to take out the procession. The argument, however, took an ugly turn when many of them reportedly started attacking the police.
