The 12 year old is working hard under watchful eyes of coach Jesse Grewal targeting to compete at the highest level internationally by 2018-2019

NewZNew (Chandigarh) : With her recent winning streak on the domestic circuit, Vasundhara Thiara, all of 12 and a student of Vivek High School Chandigarh, has jumped to the top Junior Girls, Category-C ranking in the Indian Golf Union Order of Merit.

Finishing last year in No. 2 ranking, the highly focussed and persevering little champ, pushed her ranking to the top with a win in the highly challenging IGU Army Ladies & Junior Girls Golf tournament conducted at the AEPTA Golf Club in New Delhi from the 4th till 7th May. This is her second successive win in the tournament. In addition to being considered as a very tight and tricky course, the AEPTA course during this year’s tournament had very difficult pin positions.

Lying in joint third position at the end of Day One, Vasundhara raised her game a few notches to return as the leader on Day Two. Day Three saw her leaving her competition far behind, finishing the final day a whopping 8 strokes clear of the second finisher.

The champion golfer, who moved to a higher category in the IGU Ladies & Junior Girls Golf Tour last year, has won two of the three tournaments she has played so far this year. In the recent Captain’s Day Tournament at the Chandigarh Golf Club, she clinched the top spot in the 0 to 8 handicap category.

Thereafter playing in 1st IGU Ladies & Junior Girls Golf Tournament, again at the Chandigarh Golf Club, from April 28 to May 1, she had to settle for the 2nd position, having had to settle for playing with her 3 Wood instead of the new Driver which arrived from the US just a few days before the tournament, giving her no time to get used to it.

The mercurial rise of Vasundhara in this sport has not gone unnoticed. In September this year, Vasundhara was extended support by The Golf Foundation head quartered in Delhi which was established to help a pool of talented golfers in India for producing world champions. The Foundation wants to create a global golf footprint with these junior golfers since it believes they are highly motivated, hardworking, dedicated to excel at the national and international levels. In addition to numerous international events, the fact that golf has been included in the Olympics has hugely widened the opportunities for these golfers. The Golf Foundation is affiliated to the Indian Golf Union (IGU) and supported by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).

Vasundhara’s focus this year, as advised by her coach Jesse Grewal, would be heavily on training. Therefore, she has decided to play tournaments very selectively so as not to interfere with her training schedule. This is being done primarily to strengthen her game by improving existing strokes and increasing her repertoire of shots to enable her to play in different conditions. Though she is the longest hitter of the golf ball in her category, her distance has increased considerably more with some new changes introduced by her coach Jesse Grewal.

She has recently started playing with a new Golf set and is quickly adapting to it. Vasundhara also spends a substantial amount of time with her mental strengthening trainer Irina Brar. Here too a lot of work is being done to make her mentally strong as well as on a whole lot of finer aspects of the game. Physical fitness is an area which she is laying a lot of emphasis on and therefore works out regularly. Vasundhara and her coach are targeting 2018-2019 as the time she should be competing at the highest level internationally.
