Isekai anime, much as its tropes are overused, keeps finding its way to being one of the most sought-after anime genres. Surprisingly, the most-watched shows such as ‘Re: Zero – Starting Life In Another World,’ ‘Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation,’ ‘Log Horizon,‘ and ‘No Game No Life’ are all unsurprisingly isekai.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Netflix too has included shows from the genre in its continuously growing list. Though, rather than going with a strict definition of the genre, we have also added anime that is somewhat an imitation of the theme of the isekai series so that the list can be made more exciting and different. All these shows are available to watch on Netflix, and we have also given the link at the end of each suggestion.

16. NiNoKuni (2019)

Based on the video game series of the same name, ‘NiNoKuni’ is directed by Yoshiyuki Momose. It follows two boys, Haru and Yū, who land in the parallel world of Evermore minutes after losing their best friend, Kotona, to a stabbing. At the kingdom of Evermore, they meet Princess Astrid, who is strikingly similar to Kotona. As the two men struggle to compartmentalize reality and fiction, we have a compelling isekai anime fueled by magical creatures and objects, ultimately leading to a tearful point of parting. ‘NiNoKuni’ succeeds in transposing the game pretty well and provides great action, pretty visuals, and engaging drama. 15. Fate/Extra Last Encore (2018)

‘Fate/Extra Last Encore’ tracks Hakuno Kishinami, who is found in a bloodbath when he awakens at the Tsukimihara Academy, which is a high school that doubles as a battlefield for the next Holy Grail war. A few of the Earth-projected souls who are at school will be given their servants and chosen as the “Masters” for the official tournament after aptitude tests. The others will be eliminated, AKA killed. As Kishinami is left wondering how he got there, he becomes a servant and trudges along his war-torn journey in the school to discover what it and the war even mean. Maybe the center of the Moon Cell computer that developed the school holds the answers. With nice animation set in an alternate universe and stylized combat, ‘Fate/Extra Last Encore’ performs well as an Isekai anime. You may view it here.

14. The Rising of the Shield Hero (2019- )

Directed by Takao Abo, based on the Japanese light novel series of Aneko Yusagi, ‘The Rising of the Shield Hero’ is a show that centers around Naofumi Iwatani, who is one of the Four Cardinal Heroes appointed by the kingdom of Melromarc (in another universe) as its heroes to protect it against the Waves of Catastrophe. But whereas the other three heroes get their weapons, Naofumi gets a shield, thus subjecting him to ridicule by his peers and the people. The discriminated and cornered Naofumi embarks on a difficult quest to become powerful enough to guard Melromarc and gain a reputation, purchasing a demi-human slave known as Raphtalia to keep him company. 13. Good Night World (2023)

‘Good Night World’ is adapted from the manga series of the same name written by Uru Okabe. This thought-provoking cerebral drama is about the four Arima family members who are estranged from one another despite living under the same roof and find solace in the multiplayer role-playing VR game known as PLANET. Unaware of one another, Taichiro Arima and his dysfunctional family have become a formidable force in the game, “The Akabane Family,” with the rule being that they are not allowed to inquire about one another’s lives offline. The Akabane family plays the game together, sharing adventures and quests, the ultimate goal being the defeat of the boss, i.e., the Black Bird of Happiness. But when the real and virtual worlds become intertwined, will the Akabane Family, or the Arima family as we know them, remain resilient? Watch ‘Good Night World’ to know. .

12. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019 -)

‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’ is a well-liked fantasy anime that tells the tale of vengeance, self-discovery, and redemption. Based on Koyoharu Gotogue’s Japanese manga of the same name, the series focuses on a diligent and young teenager Tanjirou Kamado who wakes up one morning to discover that his family has been massacred by a demon. His sister is the sole survivor and has also been demonified. Rather than take the old wisdom and abandon all hope of ever making her a human being once more, Tanjirou makes it a personal mission to get her back to health and avenge her slain family members by standing against the strongest demon in the world. Along the way, he becomes a part of the Demon Slayer Corps and embarks on a journey filled with obstacles. In the process, he picks up some great lessons and discovers lifelong friends. 11. Delicious in Dungeon (2024- )

Everyone would love to eat pizzas for supper but how about some well-cooked delicious monsters? Well, in ‘Delicious in Dungeon,’ that is what a group of adventurers are compelled to do after they lose their leader Laios Touden’s sister who is consumed by a red dragon in a dungeon. Determined to rescue her before she is digested, the group heads back into the dungeon to slay the dragon but are forced to subsist on monster meat. However, as the title suggests, the series offers a delicious take on slayed monsters while following the adventurers as they search for the red dragon. Directed by Yoshihiro Miyajima, the anime is based on Ryoko Kui’s manga of the same name. Winner of both Best Comedy and Best Adventure at the Anime Corner awards of Winter 2024, ‘Delicious in Dungeon’ is a highly entertaining isekai anime which can be streamed here.

10. One Piece (1999)

Monkey D. Luffy is a young free spirit pirate with grand ambitions for someone with little life experience who is merely a naive teenager. He wishes to seek the highly sought-after One Piece treasure to become the King of the Pirates and keep a promise he had previously made to a special someone. But in order to reach such a lofty ambition, first, he must gather a group of gifted friends who are always there for him. ‘One Piece’ is notorious for depicting Monkey’s arduous path that challenges him in every conceivable manner. The action-adventure show is among the greatest anime productions of all time. The series counts millions of fans internationally and enjoys high ratings on the majority of web platforms. The fantasy universe that the audience becomes introduced to within the anime is not only filled with surprise mysteries but also with thrilling characters who are all unique in their own right. 9. Uncle from Another World (2022 – 2023)

After Yousuke “Ojisan” Shibazaki suffers a gruesome truck accident, he remains in his vegetative state for 17 long years. When he eventually awakens, he informs his nephew Takafumi Takaoka that he had been living the entire duration in an imaginary world named Gran Bahamal. Of course, Takafumi does not believe his uncle until Shibazaki begins exhibiting his otherworldly magical abilities. Emboldened to earn money from his special talent, the pair created a YouTube channel. As Takafumi instructs his uncle on the technological advancements while he was away, Yousuke applies the lessons he learned from staying in the fantasy world in dealing with the issues he encounters at present. 8. Bastard‼ Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy (2022 – 2023)

LIDENFILMS’ ‘Bastard‼ Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy’ is an action show based on a fantasy world. If you want to watch a show that is reminiscent of the otherworldly nature of a normal isekai then this could possibly be the right anime for you. Deadly thunder empress Nei Arshes, icy and ruthless Kall-Su, ninja master Gara, and mysterious dark priest Abigail are all referred to as the Four Lords of Havoc. In their relentless pursuit of their perverted ambitions, they choose to invade Metallicana kingdom-placing High Priest Geo in a difficult situation to protect its citizens. It appears that the only way that he was able to effectively rescue the kingdom is by unleashing the powerful wizard Dark Schneider. But there is an issue. Schneider was once a friend of the Four Lords of Havoc, and no one can tell what he would do if left to himself. Finally, Priest Geo is compelled by fate to make a gamble without knowing what will happen. The unfolding drama is not only thrilling but also filled with twists and turns. 7. Beastars (2019 -)

The fragile balance and harmony of carnivores and herbivores seem to break when an alpaca named Tem passes away after a predation event. Interestingly, Tem was friends with Legoshi, a wolf who chooses to lay low after the gruesome incident so as not to get into trouble unnecessarily. The red deer Louis does not think Legoshi should go to such extremes and seems to dislike the entire idea. When he needs to train someone by breaking into the drama club at night, he selects Legoshi for the lookout shift. This decision leads to his first meeting with Haru, a white dwarf rabbit, for whom he starts growing feelings soon afterward. However, Legoshi’s decisions are conflicted by his own predatory instincts. As he tries to make sense of his emotions, the world around him is falling further into chaos. The drama that unfolds is a must-watch. Individuals searching for isekai anime will surely love ‘Beastars’ as it transports audiences to a fantastical journey. 6. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021)

Based on the Netflix series of the same name, ‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf,’ is a dark fantasy film written by Beau DeMayo. The Kwang Il Han-directed film is about a young and hot-headed witcher called Vesemir who attempts to make coins by accepting perilous contracts to slay monsters at the risk of his life. As he resolutely navigates a tough world filled with political strife and evil foes, his life takes an unusual turn. He is caught up in the mystery of the sorceress Tetra. Gradually, he comes to reveal painful realities of the world that he lives in and discovers the real meaning of his existence. You can stream the show here.

5. Dragon’s Dogma (2020)

Sublimation Studio’s ‘Dragon Dogma’ is a revenge story and based on a fantasy world. The anime depicts a man who meets a tragic death when his heart is taken away by a dragon. When he is brought back to life as an Arisen, he promises revenge. Like isekai show cases, the anime too has a protagonist who is revived/reincarnated. 4. Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King (2023)

Adapted from Yuuki Tabata’s hit Japanese manga series, ‘Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King’ is a fantasy action movie. In this anime, Asta is the protagonist who was born in the magical world but wants to be the Wizard King without any special power of his own. Meanwhile, his competitor Yuno is not only selected by the legendary 4-leaf Grimoire but has also gained popularity as a genius mage who is respected by others. As Asta strives towards his seemingly unattainable goal, his world is turned upside down following Conrad Leto, who has his mighty Imperial Sword, and orders the Clover Kingdom, where he was once a well-respected man, destroyed. 3. High-Rise Invasion (2021-)

This survival horror series goes by the same name as the manga series it is adapted from, written by Tsuina Miura and illustrated by Takahiro Oba. It is led by Masahiro Takata and features Yuri, a girl trapped in a world of skyscrapers and bridges. There are masked people who are trying to kill her and others who are also trapped in this world that appears to be a center for God creation. But she must keep herself safe and locate her brother Rika, and only then can they search for an escape. 2. Devilman Crybaby (2018)

In the fantasy world of ‘Devilman: Crybaby’ devils, much as they possess great powers, they cannot assume form unless they find a host and take them over. But even if they do decide to have a person with a strong will as their host, the individual can even defeat the demon to obtain their powers and become a Devilman. Ryou Asuka has an interest in discovering devils, so he requests the assistance of Akira Fudou, his childhood friend. Due to his kind heart, Fudou agrees, unaware they will be at a sabbath where demons will begin to possess partygoers. Desperate for a way out, Fudou, in an attempt to save his friend, becomes a Devilman upon fusing with the devil Amon. Despite his success in defeating the demons, his life is forever altered.
