NewZNew (Chandigarh) : The outgoing year 2014 would be recorded as year of reforms in the history of School Education in Punjab. Besides modernization of education system, the department has put new milestone in the field of primary, secondary and senior secondary education.
Special initiatives taken by the Punjab Education Department in this year included the establishment of Six Special Residential Senior Secondary Schools at Amritsar, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali and Patiala under Society for Promotion of Quality Education for poor and Meritorious Students of Punjab and they are functional from August 2014. Students in these schools are provided free education, lodging, boarding, uniforms, books, stationery and extra teaching. Apart from this landmark initiative the other big reformatory step was the commencement of Vocational Education Scheme in 100 schools, a memorandum has been signed between department and NSDC for National Skill Qualification Framework.
This program would provide guaranteed employment to the senior secondary pass outs of Vocational School. Special Vocational Education would be imparted to students from class 9 to 12 for 2014-15 session. This education would be provided in trades including Health Care, IT, Retail, Automobile, Security and Beauty and Wellness. 5000 students will be admitted in first phase, who will get vocational education for 4 years and after passing their Senior Secondary they will be able to get jobs in their respective trade/profession on the basis of certificate issued by concerned authorities.
Adding another feather to its cap, 50 teachers of education department were selected for four week education training in University of Toronto Canada in the month of July-August 2014. Similarly, the Punjab Government received 1st and 2nd prize during Inspire Award in field of science at Pragiti Maidan, New Delhi. Competition organizing by BBMB (Energy Ministry, India) Punjab got 2 second positions and 2 consolation prizes. The other landmark achievements of the department included the conferring of 2nd prize to disabled students of Punjab during National festival of disabled students including three other positions. The winning streak of the education department continued with the first prize for the state in 61st National School games held at Anandpur Sahib and Badal village.
Keeping the same pace the education department stood first in north India in Mid-day-Meal scheme and Punjab bagged second position in all India. Apart from the education, the department also did philanthropic activities like the commencement of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’ campaign for saving girl child and girl education.
The department also provided job opportunities to 2236 teachers, who were recruited following the transparent manner while the recruitment of 3013 teachers is under process. In first of its kind, the Education Department has also started the holding of public meeting (lok adalt) to sort out the cases pertaining to employees of department.
