11. The Love Witch (2016)

What’s unique and appealing about this horror comedy film is that it is filmed in the Technicolor look of the 60s and 70s, which is a nod to that period and a critique of gender roles. Splendidly directed by Anna Biller, who penned, edited, produced, and directed as well as scored the film, ‘The Love Witch’ is an account of a contemporary witch/femme fatale, Elaine, who uses her magical spells and potions to entice men in search of true love. However, instead of getting men close to her, she kills them each time, seemingly by accident. Will her quest for her Prince Charming end? Or will men’s bodies continue to pile up? 10. Joy Ride (2023)

‘Joy Ride’ is a comedy drama that tracks the tempestuous and hedonistic adventure of four individuals as they drive around Beijing, China, to clinch a specific deal. Best friends Audrey and Lolo, and Lolo’s cousin Vanessa, also known as “Deadeye,” and Audrey’s college friend Kat, head to Beijing from their home state of Washington to meet with a businessman. If Audrey can land a deal with him, her big promotion is as good as sealed. But when the man requests information about Audrey’s biological parents, since she is adopted, the four go to the adoption agency and find Audrey’s birth parents. What was to be a routine trip turns into a rollercoaster ride of sorts as they find themselves trying to navigate one perilous situation after another, from disposing of drugs, getting stranded in the middle of nowhere, losing their passports, and participating in bizarre sex games. 9. Bros (2022)

Bobby Lieber, a museum curator, gets acquainted with Aaron Shepard, a lawyer, in a nightclub. Though both of them are attracted to one another, their commitment issues are towering before their desire to be together. As they attempt to seek alternative avenues to move on from one another, including dating other men, the attraction and the feeling of missing only intensify. Supported by the acting of an LGBTQ+ lead cast, including Billy Eichner as Bobby Lieber, Luke Macfarlane and Aaron Shepard, and Monica Raymund, Ts Madison, and Guillermo Díaz, ‘Bros’ is a hilarious drama with a heart and soul of its own. 8. Drive-Away Dolls (2024)

Starring Geraldine Viswanathan and Margaret Qualley, ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ is a story about Jamie and Marian, who embark on a road trip from Philadelphia to Marian’s aunt in Tallahassee, Florida. They are both looking for a new beginning, but the trip becomes a wild ride due to the cargo in the rental car they are driving, which contains “toys” attached to a powerful political player. As the women go through the challenges, such as evading a group of goons, the Ethan Coen-directed film interweaves crime and comedy to present us with a wildly entertaining dark drama that is new, queer, and cool. 7. Honey Don’t! (2025)

With a star-studded cast featuring Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris Evans, ‘Honey Don’t! ‘ is a dark comedy and the second film in Ethan Coen’s lesbian “B-movie” trilogy, the first film being ‘ Drive-Away Dolls.’ The film has a private investigator, a police officer, and a cult leader at the helm and features the way the three characters meet each other, with a drug racket and an alternating series of murders in the background. How the detective’s new case puts her in the face of the handsome police officer and the suspicious cult leader, and what follows makes ‘Honey Don’t! ‘ a bingeworthy movie. 6. Tangerine (2015)

Sean Baker’s ‘Tangerine’ is the story of two transgender sex workers, Sin-Dee, and her best friend, Alexandra, who take to the streets of Los Angeles on Christmas Eve in search of and to confront the former’s cheating boyfriend, Chester. Filmed using iPhones, the gritty film provides a close-up look at the events the two characters experience during their quest, balancing realism and comedy beautifully. The unflinching themes tackled in ‘Tangerine,’ and its presentation of the unpalatable reality that transgender individuals live today, make it a compelling and emotional watch. It features Kitana Kiki Rodriguez as Sin-Dee, Mya Taylor as Alexandra, and James Ransone as Chester.
5. Candyman (2021)

The ‘Candyman’ films are adapted from Clive Barker’s short story ‘The Forbidden,’ included in Volume 5 of his ‘Books of Blood’ series. The eponymous film takes place between the action of ‘Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh’ and ‘Candyman 3: Day of the Dead.’ It tracks Anthony (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), an artist, who is looking for inspiration and his quest seems to conclude when he finds out about the tale of Candyman, a deadly demon who used to haunt Anthony’s South Side Chicago. As he becomes drawn into his research, odd occurrences start to take place around him. It looks as if someone has actually called forth the killer, though there is no method of sending him back where he started. Gripping and psychological, ‘Candyman’ is written and directed by Nia DaCosta.
4. Monkey Man (2024)

‘Monkey Man’ is Dev Patel’s first time as a director, and cleverly mixes reality with mythology. The film is based on Kid (Patel), a man who takes up work in illegal fight clubs for survival. Moved by the stories of Lord Hanuman, one of the Hindu gods, he takes up a monkey mask to cover his face as he is on a mission to avenge the death of his mother. A simple revenge action thriller narrated excellently through strong storytelling and good sequences, ‘Monkey Man’ is among the top action films to have released in recent times.
3. The Northman (2022)

Drawn from the Nordic folklore of Amleth, Robert Eggers’s ‘The Northman’ was made in 9th century AD. It is focused on Prince Amleth and his training among a group of berserkers, driven by suffering and fury against his uncle Fjölnir, who murdered his dad, King Aurvandill. Amleth escaped as a child and became a ruthless war machine. When he finally finds Fjölnir, he is torn to discover his mother, Queen Gudrún, is Fjölnir’s lover. Will this hinder him on his quest for revenge? Starring Claes Bang, Alexander Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke, and Nicole Kidman, ‘The Northman’ is a classic Robert Eggers drama filled with marvelous visual work and topped with legends, myths, and history.

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, ‘Psycho’ is actually an instruction manual for all contemporary horror/thriller films. Adapted from the novel of the same author, Robert Bloch, the movie is about Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), who takes shelter in a remote hotel near Fairvale, her destination point, because of a storm. She encounters a man named Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), whose abiding love for his ill mother compels him to do things he doesn’t believe in. But he is compelled to do so, and it seems as if his mother “takes control of him.” Unknown to Marion, Norman’s mother, who has been confined to bed for a very long period of time, carries in her womb a secret so ghastly that it has claimed the lives of numerous people. ‘Psycho’ is a must-see for every film buff and is an eternally classic pick for any list of best movies ever.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, ‘Requiem for a Dream’ follows the lives of four drug abusers, who find themselves somewhere in between the boundaries of pleasure and agony. Sara, an old lady, begins taking amphetamines so that she can lose some weight and be seen on her favorite television show. Her son Harry and his buddy Tyrone are addicts and both sell drugs to finance their failed, indulgent lifestyle. Lastly, there is Harry’s prostitute girlfriend Marion, who is an addict as well. As drugs obscure their perception of reality, ‘Requiem for a Dream’ becomes a dark psychological journey into drug addiction and its ghastly repercussions, bordering on the absurd and the obscene.
