The Infosys Chandigarh campus has been awarded the LEED EBOM (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Existing Building Operation & Maintenance) Platinum certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Infosys now has 18.25 million square feet of highest rated green buildings – out of which 16.9 million square feet are LEED Platinum rated and 1.35 million square feet are GRIHA 5-star rated buildings.

The LEED Green Building Rating System is a globally accepted benchmark for design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings. Infosys has the largest building area as LEED Platinum certified in the IT office space category. To make the campuses sustainable and resource efficient, Infosys followed a two pronged strategy since 2008 – to design new buildings to highest efficiency standards and implement deep retrofits in old buildings to make them efficient.

For all existing buildings, efficiency improvements were achieved through large-scale retrofit projects, which included office buildings, food courts, training center, guest houses, and sports complex in the development center in Chandigarh. Major interventions included complete re-engineering of chiller plants, air handling units, building management system (BMS) retrofit, UPS retrofit, lighting retrofit, etc. These initiatives have helped Infosys lower operating costs, enhance equipment life, create healthier indoor air quality, and improve occupant comfort and satisfaction.

Some of the key features that contributed to this accreditation are:

Water efficiency: Currently, water savings in the campus is to the tune of 36% compared to LEED baseline water consumption owing to demand side conservation measures such as low flow fixtures, aerators and use of recycled water from STP (sewage treatment plant). In addition to this, the campus has smart water metering installed that are connected to BMS and provides data related to water consumption in real time. With all these initiatives the campus managed to reduce per capita water consumption by 6% in FY2018, compared to FY2017.

Energy efficiency: The installation of efficient chillers, replacing old pumps with efficient right sized pumps, lighting retrofit with LED fixtures, VFDs (Variable Frequency Drive) and Building Management Systems in the buildings helped in saving energy. Infosys Chandigarh campus has one of the lowest per capita energy consumption among different campuses of Infosys in India.

Green power: The project has installed on site renewable energy systems of 202 kilowatt (kW) capacity to offset a part of the building energy consumption. The total solar power generated in FY2018 was about 0.32 million kWh. We are working with the Government to enable green power procurement in Chandigarh, which is not possible as of today.

Waste management: The campus currently treats 0.19 TPD of waste at its composting plant.

Infosys has also installed smart parking management systems for optimizing operational costs, to monitor and manage parking areas.

Over the years, Infosys has demonstrated leadership in implementing innovative technologies and practices to foster sustainability, leading to high operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts.
