Early Life and Education
Mary Berry was born on 24th March 1935 in Bath, Somerset, England as the second of three children of Margaret and Alleyne. Her father was a planner and surveyor who was the mayor of Bath in 1952 and also played a part in founding the University of Bath. Berry was diagnosed with polio at the age of 13 and spent three months in the hospital. She emerged with a curved spine, a limp left hand, and a slender left arm. Berry studied at Bath High School, where she fell in love with domestic science. She proceeded to study at Bath College of Domestic Science.
Career Start

Berry started her career at the showroom of Bath electricity board. She then made house calls to demonstrate to new customers how to utilize their electric ovens. To demonstrate, she would prepare a Victoria sponge in the oven. Berry at 22 was applying to work for the Dutch Dairy Bureau while she attended evening classes at the City and Guilds of London Institute. She was eventually able to convince her boss to send her to Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in France. Following that, Berry was employed in various cooking-related positions. In 1966, she was the food editor of Housewife magazine, and in 1970 was food editor of Ideal Home.
Cookbooks
During her time as a recipe tester for the PR agency Benson’s, Berry started writing her initial cookbook. Her first book, “The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook,” was launched in 1970. Berry has written more than 70 cookbooks since then and has sold more than five million. She usually collaborates with her assistant Lucy Young on her books. One of Berry’s most popular cookbooks is her bestseller in 2009, “Baking Bible,” which was included as one of the ten best baking books by the online newspaper the Independent.
Television Career
In 2010, Berry attained an entirely new degree of fame when she started appearing on the BBC television program “The Great British Bake Off” as a judge. She judged alongside baker Paul Hollywood until 2016, when she was succeeded by Prue Leith. Berry had some other shows during her time on “GBBO.” In 2014, she hosted her own BBC Two series called “Mary Berry Cooks.” The following year, she hosted “Mary Berry’s Absolute Favorites,” and in 2016 hosted “Mary Berry Everyday” and “Mary Berry’s Easter Feast.” In late 2017, Berry presented a four-part BBC One series called “Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets,” in which she explored four historic houses in the UK through the lenses of food and history.
In 2018, Berry judged on the BBC One series “Britain’s Best Home Cook” along with Dan Doherty and Chris Bavin. She continued on the show, now renamed “Best Home Cook,” until the series ended in 2022. During this time, she hosted the six-part cookery series “Mary Berry’s Simple Comforts” on BBC Two in 2020. Personal Life
Berry has been married to Paul Hunnings since 1966. They have one son and one daughter, and had a third son who died in a car crash in 1989. Berry has lived in Penn, Buckinghamshire, for more than 40 years; in 2018, she and her husband relocated to Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
In 2012, Berry was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to the culinary arts. Subsequently, in 2020, she was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to the culinary arts, broadcasting, and charity.
