NewZNew (Chandigarh) : National Association for the Blind (NAB) celebrated International White Cane Day at Bal Bhawan, Sector 23, on Monday. Padma Shri Milkha Singh, and Mrs. Tejinder Kaur, Chairperson, Punjab Infrastructure and Regulatory Authority (PIRA) were the chief guests for the occasion.
The screening of the movie ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ in the audio-described format- catering to the needs of the blind, made the day memorable. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the friendlier version of the movie. Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Milkha Singh motivated the audience comprising of visually impaired students and teachers from various colleges and schools of the tricity. He pointed out the importance of finding one’s passion and pursuing it.
The event also marked the launch of the musical group, ‘Divine Eyes’, comprising of only visually impaired, a unique initiative by NAB. Sponsor of the event, Amway opportunity foundation (AOF) – corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of Amway India, gave away musical instruments to the members of the band. Emphasizing the aim of the project, Vinod Chadha, Hony. President NAB (Chandigarh & Punjab branches) said “we have always tried to create opportunities for the recognition of the talent of visually impaired and by effectively launching divine eyes NAB music academy provides them with a ready platform to showcase their talent and is one of the ways in which our organization acts for their welfare.”
National Association for the Blind, India (NAB) established in Mumbai on 19th January 1952, for Blind Welfare, is the largest voluntary organization for the welfare of blind in India. The association is rendering valuable service to the society by developing educational, vocational and employment services for the incurable blind children and adults through its vast network in the country.
The Chandigarh branch of the association was made functional in 2005 to serve the visually impaired in the city. Its activities are aimed at the prevention and cure of blindness; education, vocational training, employment, rehabilitation, maintenance of talking library and all activities related to welfare of the blind.
