NIIFT students showcase ‘Suvyan 2016’

NewZNew (Chandigarh) : Students of Textile Design Department at Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology, Mohali showcased their annual final collection –‘Suvyan 2016’ – at Hotel Shivalik View today. Suvyan, the final presentation was an integration of the learning that the students imbibed during their education at the institute .

This year ,‘Suvyan 2016’ showcased 32 collections where students expressed their individual statements as design solutions for fabrics, range of home furnishing products as bedsheets,cushions,duvet covers , scarves,stoles through the media of colors, materials, finishes and techniques etc. Each student worked with an industrial client for a nearby period of 5 months which results in the development of their individual collections and exhibition of design work. These are created as per the need and demand of the industry and their buyers.

Anirudh Tewari, IAS, Chairman, NIIFT and Principal Secretary, Dep’t of Industries and Commerce, Punjab who was Chief Guest during occasion inaugurated the exhibition.

The students were guided by their mentors, Deepti, Shweta Sharma and Indeep. An eminent jury consisted of Textile designers, Industry experts and Art proponent were invited to evaluate the collections for the awards. Students worked with renowned export and designer houses like Ritu Kumar, Shingora Shawls,Ludhiana, Taj Velvet & Silk Mills, Agra, Kala Kriti, KK Studios, Abhitex International, Vanshika overseas, Somendra textiles, Jaipur and Jv Digital Printing unit.

Tanu Kashyap, IAS, Director General, NIIFT and Director, Dept of Industries and Commerce, Punjab said that the work of Textile Design Students is outstanding and they have really put in their best efforts by creating beautiful home furnishing collections.

Inderjit Singh, Director, NIIFT, Mohali said that Suvyan plays an important role for our students to uncover their best creations. Dr Poonam Aggarwal, Deputy Registrar, NIIFT, said that Suvyan is one of the best laid out exhibitions and we are onfident that these students will contribute highly to put Indian Textile on the world map.

Some of the collections were:-

  • Deepika worked on “ Aristocrats”that  refers to people of a particular  social order of the society. Her collection consisted of  Cushion covers , Table runners of different sizes and orientation.
  • Nivedita worked on” Lost In Tibet” referring to The Eternal, or Infinite, Knot (Sanskrit, “Srivastsa”) which is the classic icon for the concept of reality.
  • Vardana worked on “Beauty of flight” meaning Beautiful feather repeats, and abstract feathers combine within the beauty of flight, as we see the moody and solemn side to the animal print story.
  • Srishti’s  theme was “Klieg” that refers to oil lamps which are lit on every joyous or auspicious occasion. It is even a sign of peace, harmony and happiness.
  • “Feather Float” by Harleen was Inspired from hand drawn lines incorporated with kantha embroidery as a print the theme has a raw look.
  • Akshita worked on “Around the world”  which meant that as the tourist moves around the world and imbibes the different elements around the globe in the same way the thoughts of the tourist have been incorporated in the designing of the stoles and scarves.

Meanwhiel during occasion, the Textile Design Awards  were given as: Best Design Collection- Vardhana Gupta, Most Innivative Collection- Manmohan Singh Rana, Most Commercail Collection- Srishti Kohli, Special Jury Award- Nivedita Singla and Deepika Kaur and Best Design Methodology- Akshita Sethi
