NewZNew (Chandigarh) : With Festive season around the corner, The “Big Gandhigiri” an initiative by Chandigarh Tourism , Chandigarh University & 92.7 Big FM are looking beyond cleaning up and beautifying walls in Chandigarh. Their larger goal is waste management in the city.
“Big Gandhigiri” which is aligned with the Prime Minister’s Swacch Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign) which also completes its first year successfully today . If last year Gandhi Jayanti was about picking up the broom to clean Tricity and promote not throwing garbage on the roads under mission Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, this year 92.7 Big FM took a leap forward by celebrating Big Gandhigiri, an initiative to clean up the city’s walls and to add art work to beautify the space at the same time
As a part of “Big Gandhigiri”, wherein listeners of Big FM & residents from tricity were asked to identify & suggest dirty public wall / area and as first in the line a surge of beautification was given to wall at Leisure Valley Sector 10 . Followed with walls in the areas of Sector 22. Graffiti artists from tricity and listeners of Big FM participated in this activity in equal numbers.
“Chandigarh is the city we all grew up in and love but we found it to be quite dirty at few places. City’s walls at few places are also being used as urinals so we have decided to identify a wall each time, clean it up and paint on it. We believe that this would deter people from misusing the walls,” explains Pankaj who says he’s an avid painter.
The event held today was graced by Ms. Kavita Singh IAS, Director Tourism, Chandigarh Administration as a guest of honour , she also shared her views on the importance of Swach Bharat Abhiyaan and how important the same is to make country better. She said, “clean is healthy and happy and we must go all out to make it a consistent mass movement.”
With Festive season around the corner Tanya Kaushal , Cluster Head , BIG FM explains that they are looking beyond cleaning up and beautifying walls. Big Gandhigiri’s larger goal is waste management in the city. “We are trying to make a difference in the city we were raised in. Our ultimate aim is to make people start owning their environment; own public spaces so it can be much cleaner. We are working towards that philosophy for Swachh Bharat Swasth Bharat. If all of us are proud of our city, we’ll go to any lengths to keep it clean,” said Tanya.
The initiative also involved honoring those local heroes who took up the challenge to keep their society / RWA area clean through various initiatives taken at an individual / organizational level. The RJ’s of Big FM to entertain and regale the crowd present there.
