The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has clarified through a circular that Adhaar card or the 12 digit Adhaar number is not required to buy new insurance policies.

However, it stated that for new insurance policy holders could link their Adhaar numbers with the policy within a period of six months starting from the date of registration.
