Old students fondly remember Founder Principal, Late Shanta H Singh “Big Aunty”.
NewZNew (Chandigarh) : Reunion of the NPS Alumni was organized at the school campus here today to celebrate the 94th Birth Anniversary of its Founder Principal, Late Shanta H Singh also popularly known as “Big Aunty”. About 300 old students attended the reunion and reminisced about their school days with Big Aunty as the Principal. NPS which was started in 1960 with only 14 Students flourished into a Secondary School in 1969 and Sr. Sec. in the year 1991 due to relentless efforts made by Late Shanta H Singh.
Born on January 15, 1921 Late Shanta H Singh , she completed her matriculation in 1937 from Kinnaird College for Women in Lahore. After completing B.A. & B.T. from Dev Samaj College, Ferozepur in 1951, she started her professional career as a teacher in “Yadvindra Public School”, Patiala and remains a proud teacher of eminent personalities like Mr. Pawan Kumar Bansal (Cabinet Minister, Govt. of India), Mr. Simranjeet Singh Mann (former Member of Parliament) and Mr. N.S. Aulakh (D.G, N.S.G.).
Master Nawab Singh Virk , the first Student of NPS & other old students from batches of 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974 & 1975 specially made it a point be part of this event. Former Teachers and class IV employees who had worked and dedicated their lives for the institution were felicitated on this occasion . Teachers & students who had worked & studied under the able guidance of Late S.H. Singh fondly spoke of her and about their association with the indefatigable S.H. Singh who was known to be a hard task master. They recalled how they held their ‘Big Aunty’ in awe as her passion for work, her zeal and enthusiasm inspired and motivated them.
Speaking on the occasion Guest of honor Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, who had also been associated with Big Aunty, said that it was a sheer pleasure being associated with NPS & Big Aunty since his childhood days, she always remained like a family member and shared all the ups and downs of the institution.
On the occasion winners of the Big Aunty Maths Quest (An Annual Inter School Maths Competition) recently held for Classes IX & X students were felicitated by the Guest of Honor Mr. Pawan Kumar Bansal. Master Sarvesh Mehtani (Bhawan Vidyala Panchkula), Miss Jannat Bedi (Carmel Convent Chandigarh) and Master Savneek Bhatia (St. John’s High School, Chandigarh) were declared the winners.
A cultural program “Bhangra” was presented by the students of classes IX and X which drew old students to the lusty beats of the DHOL. The function ended with the serving of snacks and tea to the guests.
