Long term athlete development program to be launched from March 18
NewZNew (Chandigarh) : Punjab Government will organize talent hunt campaign on March 18 and 19 to select budding players for admission in Punjab Institute of Sports (PIS).
A spokesman of the Sports Department today said that on the directions of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal, who also holds the sports portfolio, to ensure maximum participation of Punjabi players in coming international events like Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and World Athletics meat, a “long term athlete development program” has been chalked out in collaboration with education department.
He said that under this program both departments would organise talent hunt campaign at block level where students born in between 2003 to 05 would be selected to impart specialized coaching and training in different games. “Approximately 10,000 students are likely to participate in selection trails and selected players would be admitted in the PIS after assessing the physical parameters as per their interest in a particular game”, he added.
He informed that students selected during this talent hunt program would be provided training in basic skills and scientific methods, physical fitness, diet, physiological training to prepare them for national and international competitions. Besides, medical and transport facilities would also be provided to the players.
The spokesman said Punjab Institute of Sports, established at SAS Nagar have 11 different in-training facilitation centres for specific games that includes Hockey, Football, Swimming, Shooting, Basketball, Wrestling, Kabbadi, Athletics and Boxing. He said that in next two years sports institute would provide 4 training centers for each game.
“With a view to develop sports culture at grass root level more than 4000 physical teachers in schools would also be imparted training in modern coaching and scientific techniques so as to assist the budding players in the schools”, he added.
